Diff cover paint

So I have a new diff cover and it's just raw steel right now. What should I use to prep it and also what type of paint should I use? Am I supposed to paint the inside as well or just leave it bare metal? Thanks

Just any standard primer will do for the outside and then top coat with whatever you like. Tremclad works good. Inside wont make a difference, it wont rust with the oil splashing around in there.

I did a Google search for "hot trannies" but nothing came up about oil coolers  :o

Worrying too much about mpg with a Jeep is similar to worrying about your sister's virginity. An ok thing to be concerned about but...

The biggest difference is prep. Make sure you clean the area you're painting really well.

When I painted my cover, it was with a rustoleum can, I think. It was just some random paint that was in my garage. I did a pretty half assed job at prepping. It lasted for two years until I smacked it on a rock and it chipped the paint. I'll be re-doing it when I'm bored.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, you're putting the cover on to protect it from rocks. If you hit a rock it will chip.
