Fuel economy tanked, things I can look into?
« on: March 02, 2012, 05:30:49 PM »
I use to be able to run between 12-14L/100km according to the dash readout. For a little while now it has been in the 16-17 range and I just did a real calculation last night when I filled up and it came out to be 19!

I need to get in for a regular scheduled maintenance (warranty) but I am wondering if it is something I can look into myself before I go in?

Going to do some searches tonight but figured I would post since I had a chance.

Thanks.

Probably just the normal winter fuel economy drop.  Usually goes by temperature

Air filter. I'm guessing it's due for an oil change which means that it's probably due for an air filter too.

Drive it to the Honda dealership, and ask for a trade! :)

more ethanol in the fuel in winter time, which really hurts milage.

Sorry. 2010 Wrangler.

This is the second winter I've had this one and even running 4x4 I was still just getting to the 15L mark last year.

Air filter looks to be due but it is in its normal service cycle. Never had such a substantial change in the past.

Find a post by TlIguana. Read his sig. That tells you everything that you need to know about fuel economy in a Jeep.

If you can't be bothered to find a post by Simon, here's the "I can't quite remember how he put it" version. It's a fracking Jeep. Your fuel economy is going to suck harder than a shop vac powered by a locomotive. Realize it, understand it, get over it. IF you have an issues with step #3 of this process, I suggest that you refer to Pook's post (#5).
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

I'm not looking for a way to improve my mileage, I'm asking what might have caused it to get so much worse all of a sudden. It is still stock, no lift, no big tires.  When I go from getting 500+ km on a tank to 350, something doesn't seem right.

Felt this was a legitimate tech question...

Then we need more technical information.

You have never changed plugs, wires, cap, etc... and are wondering why it's not running efficiently?
You have an old air filter and need an oil change and questioning fuel mileage?

If you jack it up, do the wheels spin freely? In 4x4 too?
Do you have any air in the tires?

Right now I'm gonna guess it's an Asian bird flu from parking in same garage as a honda  ;D

It's at 55k. Plugs, wires nor cap have been changed.

Oil change is due as is an air filter, but that has never caused an issue like this in the past.

I will jack it up this weekend and check the wheel spin.

Yes my tires are at the correct air pressure.

Honda is the wife's...can't help it. Someone should buy it.

And to make it easy, heres a post from me.... :D Good luck with the search Dan
I did a Google search for "hot trannies" but nothing came up about oil coolers  :o

Worrying too much about mpg with a Jeep is similar to worrying about your sister's virginity. An ok thing to be concerned about but...

Do you travel a chunk on the highway? The wind has been coming from an unusual angle and on my drive home the last week or so I had to drive directly into it. Being a brick it actually shaves a good 6 km/h off my cruising speed. Could also explain your change in fuel mileage.

How many kms on it? O2 sensors don't always throw a code when they go bad. Their life span is 120,000-160,000kms. If you are in that range might want to check it out.

Is power down at all?
