How does one 'Detroit-proof' their jeep?
« on: April 05, 2012, 09:13:53 AM »
As the title says... moving to motor city in August and debating whether or not its worth keeping the jeep and making it bomb proof or selling it to buy a beater. What have you guys seen for security?
I have come across some in depth write ups on putting in a kill switch, but have heard this might not be the best for a jeep you wheel (cf being stranded on the trail with a dead jeep). Also came across the idea of making a circuit between the brake and horn. Although I am unsure of how well this would scare thieves off in this case.

Let me know what you guys know

I approve of this message.

On a more serious note, you can install a kill-switch which basically disconnects the battery. Simple enough to do, believe Princess Auto sells the kit pretty cheap. Only downside is you'll lose all the settings in your stereo, but this can be resolved by connecting the 12v yellow wire from stereo directly to the battery.
Doesn't really help against break-ins and stealing stuff from inside the vehicle though, just from the vehicle itself from being stolen.

If your gonna move there for awhile, buy a beater down there and drive it. IMO its too much of a hassle to do an out of Provence as well as an out of country insp. buy something down there and just drive it.

Smash the window, bust the ignition out of the column and use a screwdriver to start it.
Then hope there's honour among thieves

The only way to absolutely, positively detroit-proof your vehicle is to make it look so ratty and run-down that thieves think that they will get herpes from sitting in the driver's seat.

Vinman has a good idea....but the downside is that if it's easy to climb into, you'll probably find a bunch of hobos camped out in it one morning.
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

Get a cooler and put a biohazard sticker on it get a label with contents: HIV.  Strap it to the passenger seat, so it's obvious.

No word of a lie my cousin did this in china(door locks no worky). Never had a problem. ;D

The best kind of disabling security you can do on a vehicle is one that uses several cross over features and tucks in the wiring well.

IF i were to do another system I would use some of the open relay slots in the under hood fuse pannel and do an ignition wire cut to the coil pack/rail and another wire cut on the signal for timing.  Two relays that feed into the interior to a central connection point.  The third wire cut would be done under the back by the Tcase for the fuel pump and the relay controlling it to be under dash.  Keep all of the cuts clean and stock looking for anyone taking a quick glance.

The next part is a little tricky and i haven't finished my research on it, but it would be a solid state control unit that controls the two leads for the 3 relays (2 under hood, one under dash), and requires a magnetic clip lead that has a specified ohm resistance to it. Magnetic lead is on, circuit resistance matches the control units paramater it allows the two leads to be powered up and the jeep can start and run.  When you leave, you pop off the magnetic clip and all you see is a set of points.  Any nitwit who just runs a jumper wire across them doesn't give the right resistance and you don't start.

Other variants if you are worried that someone would see the control unit and just jump it for power, you could set up the 3 relays to require ground signal to close the circuit, and supplying it with a jumper power will do nothing.

Get some hood locks and disconnect the battery everytime you leave it.

Adding a whole bunch of wire and relays sounds like a future headache.

Make sure your vehicle (if you have others) isn't on a list like this.

The biggest thing will be where you park it and what you leave in plain sight inside the jeep.  For example, don't leave anything in it.
