window tint - not what you think
« on: April 08, 2012, 11:37:33 AM »
Okay, we all SHOULD know that by law we are only required to have a rear view mirror...but did you know that if you are like me, and have your back window tinted, that if the doors are off (i.e. no mirros) you're not legal?

Quote
(2) A person shall not install, replace or cover the rear window glazing in a motor vehicle with a transparent, translucent or opaque material unless the motor vehicle has outside rear view mirrors on both the left and right that comply with section 72(2).

Now, chances of you driving around with your hardtop on and no doors are slim, but I just thought it was kind of interesting.

Most of the laws governing what is and is not legal on the highway are provincial, not federal.
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

Tint laws are the kind of laws that you get ticket for when you lip off to the cop or drive like a tool. Chances of getting pulled over for a factory tinted rear hardtop and no side mirrors are pretty much nonexistent.

I'm doing 35% on the driver and passenger windows and don't really have any concerns over getting stopped.

Not everyone lives in Calgary, though.

Read that carefully, If YOU install, replace or cover the rear window glazing...

If it came fom the factory with tinted rear windows, you should be ok without side view mirrors.

I had to peel the tint on my front windows when stopped for groceries in Provost.  RCMP told me that any window with aftermaket film was illegal because the safety glass will be held together by the film in an accident.

Is that the official RCMP opinion or the opinion of a guy wearing an RCMP uniform? Sounds like the latter to me.

I would love to see the piece of 3M that is going to hold a piece of safety glass together. ::)

I have fought this one many times.  If it is factory they can not make you remove it or ticket you, just fight it in court if the cop is being a douche.  Also I have gotten away with it 3 times because the cop said it is a safety hazard because the glass will not break as intended, my response, is my best friend owns a glass company and high standard safety glass used in Volvo and audi come with a clear layer made form the same material as tint and is used so that when the glass shatters it stays in tact and my friend would love to demonstrate the proof.  Although I can say that that answer has landed me a E-brake ticket when he asked if it worked .  :-[

Page 45 of that document.

The push for window tint bylaws started with the opening comment of:

“Every time a cop approaches a car with blacked-out windows, he is doing something no cop should have to do: walk blindly into a potentially life-threatening situation,”

After backlash by people saying, you are not allowing us to have tinted windows because we are all potential criminals made them change their tune to "it's less safe"      irritating BS.

stop pulling us over for no mudflaps and no one gets hurt hahaha :D
