What oil for a 97 AX15?
« on: June 01, 2012, 11:44:51 PM »
Going to change the oil in my gf's TJ tranny. What's it take. I thought it might be gear oil?

Really?
I went on Redline's site and punched in 97 TJ with an AX -15 and the result was 75W-90 which is what I use in my Ax-15 in my XJ( the Mt-90 GL -4 from Redline)

ATF in an AX15.... Ah nope. 75ww90 or syncro mesh or 10w30.  factory manual calls for 10w30. Atf is for slushbox's and np231's.  There is so much discussion about oil in the ax15 it will make your head hurt. I use 10w30 mixed with a bottle of Lucas trans fix.

I just went through this whole ordeal.  USE 10w30 (synthetic is what Chrysler Canada suggested in their email too me) or GL-4 Gear oil.  DO NOT use GL-5 due to the high sulpher content that will  eat awar at the brass in the synchros.  So I used red line MTL about 4 l. (but I liked the way my ax15 was running with the 10w30 in it, and its cheaper).

Do not want to use synchromax in an ax15 ever. Synchromax is for newer transmissions that use aluminum syncros.  Use will cause syncro wear and possible jamming in gears and really hard shifting. The ax15 has brass synchros, use gear oil or transmission fluid made for brass synchros.

Wow, didn't think there would be this many different opinions. Synthetic 10W30 it is, if that's what Chrysler says!

Although I found the Redline MTL GL4 oil on sale. Sounds like that will work as well.

You can't go wrong with Redline MTL, works great all year and stops some minor tranny issues caused by other fluids.  I run it in my AX-15 as daily driver and offroad rig.  Regular Redline 75W90 works great to, many success stories with both.
