Junkyard Lift
« on: May 07, 2006, 10:53:43 PM »
I just bought a '89 Cherokee. Planning to build it up real nice. 4.0L to AX-15 (maybe AX-5) to NP231.

What other transmissions can I throw in, I want to do a TH400 or 4L60 to a dual NP205. But I can't find any eng/trans adapter plates. My long term plan is to Chev small block it,.

Does anyone know what other truck leafs will fit the rear of a XJ to get a junkyard lift. Or will I have to remount the perches.

What no replies. Im guessing no adapters for a 4L. And I will have to cough up the cash for Skyjacker leafs, I just thought maybe some leafs off a Ford Truck might work for the rear of my XJ.

Who in calgary sells Superlift, Explorer ProComp, SKyjacker and Fabtech. I need 3.5" to 4" leafs, springs, coil spacer, revolver shackles for rear. Dunno much about Z Box Terraflex.

Is the rear XJ axle SOA or SUA?

If anyone has a chrysler 9.25" with discs and a spool I am on the hunt.

National 4wd may have your parts, and stock XJ rear axles are SOA. Check at "Jeep stuff" thats where I got my 3" add-a-leaf and coils. I got my coil spacers+lift blocks at National. and you mean 8.25 right? Also just so you know some cherokees came with a Dana 44's stock, which means it would bolt right in aswell (regearing would be needed of course)

F150 or Bronco coils will work, but they are stiff.  Give about 2" of lift.  Up Country Chrerokee coils or coils from a V8 Grand Cherkee (ZJ) will give about 1" of lift and ride better.  Chev s10 or Dodge dakota leaves can be used in the back.  Usually, what guys do is leave the XJ main leaf in place, and cut the eyes off the main leaf of the dakota or s10 leaves, and then just put the whole new junkyard pack in place of the factory leaves.  This will give 3-4" of lift.  Jeep commanche spring shackles can be used in the back as well for 1/2" of lift, or the shackles from a Chev 1/2 ton ('88-'98 if I remember right) which give a little more lift, maybe 3/4".  You can also use a junkyard set of cherokee leaves, and cut the ends off them, and stack them in between the leaves from your original pack:

factory main leaf
cut main leaf
factory second leaf
cut second leaf
factory thrid leaf
cut third leaf

Just do this until you dial it into the height you want.

Jeep YJ front shocks are the same design as XJ shocks, and are about 3-4" longer.

Jeep ZJ rear shocks are about 2.5" longer, but you will need to use bar pin eliminators with them.  Alternately, if you decide to throw out the rear sway bar, the mounting brackets from the rear sway bar can be bolted to the underside of the XJ and be used at bar pin eliminators.  This will add about 0.5-1" extra length to the lenght of the shock.

Go to www.naxja.org.  Do an advanced search, searching ONLY THE TITLES of the topics you want to find out about.  You'll get lots fo good info. Search on "junkyard lift" "dakota leaves" "s10 leaves" etc.  Also, check out www.cheapxj.com.  They used to have a some good stuff on there, but the site started to fall apart the last time I checked....
