Off-Road Shop Recommendations?
« on: July 01, 2012, 08:58:52 AM »
Hi all,

I am looking to get my fluids changed, and a chassis lubrication done.  I would like to get this done by a reputable off-road shop as I am wary of the stealerships, and their lack of knowledge of their products!  I am also looking for the best price on Royal Purple.  Any recommendations or nods to specific shops would be greatly appreciated.

No, I suppose it doesn't take a rocket scientist to change oil.  Personally, if my truck fit in my garage, I would do it myself.  The idea behind a reputable off-road shop doing it is because they are more familiar with lockers.  Also, it is an opportunity to try out a shop to assess customer service, quality of work, etc.  I assume that you are recommending Chanda based on past experience, and not just listing the first shop that comes to mind?

Modern and Chanda are the two best 4x4 shops in town. I do agree however that fluid changes can be done in the garage at home. There are lots of guys on here who will help you turn your first few bolts, and then stand back and watch you learn. The nice part of learning your rig is if you run into problems on the trail, you will know what tools to have on hand and get yourself out of a bind.

As for Royal Purple, it's a great product if you tow or generate heat in other ways. For a daily driver and occasional wheeler, I have found Mobil 1 or Castrol to be great. In the end, it's like Coke or Pepsi, all in your taste.

Let me know if you'd like a hand changing some fluids.

X2 for Chanda. The owner used to work at a Dodge dealership. He also specializes in offroad.

Just do it yourself or you can bring it to me, I don't mind taking your money. As for the Royal Purple, I buy a full box at a time at Mopac, I haven't found it cheaper anywhere else in town.

Dave at Broken Axle in the NE does a good job as well, prices are fair, and hes a member on here too. His screenname is Brokenaxle

Could always just PM him if you need a quote.
I did a Google search for "hot trannies" but nothing came up about oil coolers  :o

Worrying too much about mpg with a Jeep is similar to worrying about your sister's virginity. An ok thing to be concerned about but...
