cat convertor ?

Hey can I take the cat off my 97 tj 4l and just run a muffler ?

he wants a sound of a V8 lol. dont do it dude u will lose power then gain.... also ur cat is there to filter ur gasses better so taking it off might kill ur MPG even more then it already is

Removed the cat from mine as it was in pieces and so far haven't noticed a power loss, or had any issues with check engine lights, but jesus is it loud, even with a new "quiet" muffler, if yours is in good shape I would keep it.

Yes you can remove it.  I have not been running a cat in my YJ for almost 10 years.  However, YJs only have 1 O2 sensor so it does not matter.  Being a TJ you might experience some minor issues but there are people out there than run without them just fine.  Plus bad cat with cause far more issues with performance and MPGs than not running one

well i think i will just take it off then, loud does not bother me, i am used to a 454 with lumpy cam and headers lol

I had a bad cat on my gf's 97 TJ, chopped it and the muffler out. Put in some pipe and a flowmaster Super 44 and spark plug non foulers for the O2 sensor. Works great, a little on the loud side though haha.

Why would you lose power by removing the cat?
`48 CJ2A, `54 CJ3B, `97 TJ, and 03 WJ...batting close to .500 when it comes to jeep models owned vs. jeep models created.....

Sure, but it's got nothing compared to O pipes!
That's what is really needed here for some serious back pressure. Not sure where you can buy them locally or how much HP gains you will see but they only have 17 left in stock so hurry. Won't last long at those prices  ;D
