Knock off hummer intake for my Tj
« on: August 16, 2012, 08:48:59 PM »
I was at a car show at max bell a few weeks ago, and saw a guy who straight piped his air intake, straight up off the throttle body and through the hood of his Tj, I thought it was a cool concept, but didn't like how he just had an air filter on the end, figured when it rains, water would go through the air filter, and being open to the elements, it wasn't a great idea.

Been searching And searching, found a few motorbike/ atv covered air filters, ( plastic cone built on around filter) to ad some protection from the elements, but they didn't come in a large enough size for my 62 mm throttle body, I think the largest I saw was 42 mm,

I just found this, didn't know they made them, wondering if anyone has seen these before?

http://www.summitracing.com/search/Product-Line/K-N-Rubber-Mounting-Flanged-Covered-Air-Filters/

I'm gonna swing by jb's performance to see what they have, let me know if you think it's a good bad or cool idea,

Thanks,

I'm friends with the owner of that tj. He is on the site as Rubi03 jef.  If you want a similar set up, but with a different filter, go see Wayne at Top Speed auto and tuning. Bring a picture of the intake and he will set you up with the similar set up.

Did that guy have blue painted rims? There are ways around having the filter open (there are mesh covers that are water resistant as well as plastic "shields" that slip over so it only sucks air up from the bottom etc) however just the filter itself will repel a fair bit of water before you have to worry about it. Think about this: your air filter blocks dirt particles big enough to harm your engine. What makes you think water particles are small enough to get in? The issue of sucking water in is when you have enough blockage (aka the thing is submerged) to have enough suction to pull the water through. Same thing goes for dust however and thats why you check your air filter on a regular basis for buildup. The last K&N filter I had claimed up to 1/3 coverage before failure.

Also, ever hear of water injection in high compression applications? Unless you are literally dunking the thing under water a little bit of moisture will at worse make your engine run a little rough due to a poor air to fuel ratio.

The straight filter is for nice days.  If it's rainin it gets a mesh cover that keeps the water out
I used to race quad with a fully exposed airfilter and we would race dry wet muddy shitty tracks and never worried bout sucking water
Like vantagetes said water particles are bigger then we all think it takes as whole lot of water Befor it comes through

And it's the ultimate cold air intake as it is above the hood and away from hot engine

it's the intimate
Intimate and hummer in the same thread  ;D

Unless someone one can provide some stats as to why leaving your air  filter out in the elements is good I'm gonna have to side with what jeep engineers and custom built jeep race teams are doing, which is not hanging the filter out to be destroyed.

Oh gawd. Don't side with the engineers. We'll never hear the end of it.  :P
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

I ordered that exact air filter, hopefully that cap should give it a little extra protection, hope it works out good,
Did you use anything around your hood to cover the sharp edges? I was thinking a little rubber fuel line, sliced down one side, and put it on the hole to give it some protection instead of metal hood on metal intake?

old cold air intake is up for grabs if anyone wants it,

ps, to rubio3 jef.

what did you do with the oil line off your valve cover? did you run it into your new intake, like stock? or did you run it to a catch can?

Thanks!

You might find this interesting, a friend of mine modified his H2 to have an HUMVEE style snorkel kind of like you are describing; I thought he did a pretty good job on it.

I put a clear hose around the hole  exactly like u said cut it down length wise but I filled the hose with clear silcone  it harden
And stays on. As fir the. Valve cover breather line I will be running into the new intake tube inthe near future
But for now I just blocked it off

ps, to rubio3 jef.

You can also get small breather filters and either run them on top of the valve cover or use a rubber hose to remote it somewhere. Or you can a) weld a bung b) drill and tap a bung c) epoxy a tube.

Not sure if tapping it would work, the material or the pipe is maybe a 1/16" thick? I guess I could screw it in, then seal it, my buddy said don't use silicone on the pipe to seal it, what kind of epoxy would you recommend? Keep it on the outside only?

I'll put up pics once all the parts are in and it's all installed
