2012 sahara Unlimited
« on: September 12, 2012, 01:50:06 PM »
Hi I currently became the new owner of a 2012 4 door Sahara Unlimited. I want to get a lift kit as well as make other changes to take it out on the trails and add better performance. however after reading some of the posts here and other forums the question on the voiding warranty still remains. I even went to the dealership were i bought my jeep and asked if i bought the lift kit through them and had them install it would it still void the warranty. They gave me a flat out "YES". Then they said even if it were a Mopar kit they wouldn't install it because they wouldn't want to void my warranty. So my question is to those who may work at any Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep dealership's that may have an insight on the situation.

Is the warranty void if a lift kit bought from Mopar or any other brand is installed by the dealership or anyone else?

Any new information is highly appreciated thanks in advance.

If it was me i would exchange the unlimited to a rubicon with the extra money for the rubi u will put that and more on a unlimited jeep

As for the waranty they might be just pulling ur leg just for them to run away from getting things done under the waranty.

For example if u put bigger tires as an upgrade from the dealer thats still a mod  but they still cover under the waranty last time i went to a toyota dealer and they had this done up tocoma and the guy said to me that its warantied and th whole nine yards

Go check at other dealers they might say it wont bother the waranty Nd if they do say it will still be covered then make sure u get it in writing

Installing a lift doesn't void your warranty from what I understand, but they can flag your vehicle (which means you might have to jump through some hoops for service).  Ultimately they have to be able to prove that the life was the direct cause of the defect if something did happen.

I believe that this is true. There are one or two other folks on this board that can probably shed some extra light on this if they choose to.

But here's something else to bear in mind - if you go to the wrong dealer, or get the wrong service writer, or the service manager is having a bad day, or you didn't clean the dirt off the bottom of your rig and the mechanic had a fight with his wife that morning, you're going to get a lot of grief over asking for any sort of warranty service on a vehicle that is modified and has been off-roaded.

If you go to the right dealership, get the right service writer, and the phase of the moon is correct, you'll get whatever has gone wrong covered under warranty with no issues at all, provided that it's not caused directly by the modifications that you put on, or by you abusing the jeep.

I have experienced service at local dealerships at both ends of the spectrum. I walked out of one dealership wanting to wash the slime off of my hands after talking to the service manager (they ended up firing him), and got $3000 worth of warranty work done to my rig (lifted, on 35's) at a different local dealer and they didn't have any issue at all with the modifications because they didn't cause the issue.

Your mileage may vary.

I've heard Chrysler has tightened up their warranty to covering only what they absolutely have too thanks to something to do with fiat. There are a couple nasty threads on Jeepforum of Chrysler bringing BS to a whole new level even on stock rigs. What I am saying is not very objective, but its what I have seen floating around the net so just take it as my 2 cents.

I have had luck getting my TJ warrentied when you can argue that the lift/ modification could not be the cause, just be prepared to do that every time.

Thanks for the advice.

I was told that there are several members that actually work at the dealership I bought my jeep (East Side Dodge). Do any of you know if there might be someone I can talk to at the dealership that may give me good information regarding mods and the warranty?

Also I have been looking for a rig that is already set to hit the trails and that wont cost me an arm and a leg as I just want to go have some fun rather than modifying my sahara. If anyone knows of some good deals please let me know. Unfortunately I travel often due to work, but If the right deal comes up and the seller is patient with me until I return I'll gladly go check out the rig and perhaps talk some business.

this will still cost you big bucks.

older modified rigs will still need a lot of maintenence to keep them running decently.
it is a good idea though :)

A "cheap" tj rubi like you suggested before will still cost around 15k with rubber and lift.

I hate warranties. Buy a good used vehicle if you want to modify it. If you buy a new Jeep and "need" a warranty, accept you cannot modify it without causing grief for your warranty. These days the Jeep computer systems are not programmed to understand how a 35" tire will affect its performance. Some of the things you change unknowingly are the airbag and vehicle stability systems.

If you need the warranty.... don't modify it.
