power steering leak
« on: May 17, 2006, 06:36:45 AM »
I've noticed the past few days a bit of power steering fluid comming out of the steering gear box. To me it looks like it is coming out from where the steering shaft goes into the gear box. Is there a seal in there and is it something I should be able to do myself or do I need to have a mechanic look at this? any help is appreciated. :)

You can pull it yourself, finding a seal is another matter. They are hard to find, let us know if you do find one.

Most places just want you to core the old box and buy a new rebuild.

I got a tip on trying the stop leak stuff.  I think I'll give that a try first then go from there.  Thanks for the advice though.  I may still ahve to try that route yet.  I'll post once I know.

I tried the stop leak stuff and it just leaked slower. I dont know if I have a big leak or not but I only have to top up every 2 months or so. And the stop leak stuff never really helped..... I also used the regular Motomaster stuff nothin fancy.

I dont think I have ever seen a jeep that didn't leak a little  power steering fluid. If you take them off road its pretty much a sure bet.
