Starting issue.

1998 Cherokee Sport 4.0l - i have an extended crank, will not fire. Starts if i press on the throttle and stays running after i drive a block or so. Any ideas?

Have you tried just cranking without throttle to see if it eventually starts? Sounds like fuel pump as the fitler AND check valve are built in. Once it's running if you turn it off does it start up right away?

Try this next time it's been sitting. Without starting key the ignition to on, then off, then on, then off a couple times. Every time you key on the pump will run to prime the system. If it starts fine like this the problem is the pump. The plus side most XJs you can replace the pump without dropping the tank. It's a tight space but doable. Also worth noting make sure you have less than half a tank if you're going to do it this way...I shouldn't have to explain that one any further.

wrong, but nice try. The 97+ xj require you to drop the tank completely.  The fuel pump, filter,sending unit and check valve are one unit. and quite expensive.

Might be worth having a fuel rail pressure test. Proper working pressure should be 48-50 PSI. This is a simple test that any decent shop should be able to perform.
It will give you an idea as to the state of the fuel pump.  Don't take it to a Chrysler/Jeep Dealer. They will likely scam you and immediately replace the fuel pump without
performing proper tests first. (trust me I know!!) A good 4x4 shop will be your best bet.

Thanks guy's. I am an advisor so i have access to a shop, Ford, but still well equipped.  I am leaning to the IAC. I havn't had an issue since that day but have a bit of a lumpy idle. I will start with a tune up and cleaning the IAC, will do a FP test at the rail see what i got.

Probably to late....but, how can I pull the pump without dropping the tank? Sorry. I need to do this tomorrow. It`s  a `96 Grand Cherokee Limited 5.2l with a factory hitch.
