Don't know what the handling characteristics would be like as a daily driver on pavement,
in the rain or hard packed snow.
Dennis,
I'm going to assume it started like this.
" I've got a factory LSD in the rear but I would like more traction out of my Jeep . I don't want to mess with redoing my ring & pinion, but I can put a lunchbox locker up front and they're not terribly hard to do for a guy with some mechanical aptitude AND they're affordable !
I've gone this route and loved the newfound ability of my 4x4, but I absolutely hated driving the rig on snow or ice in 4-HI on the road. A front locker in your TJ would not be noticeable up front in 2HI but you'll definately know it's there in 4 wheel drive. Daily driver duty ? It's doable but I wouldn't go back to that set-up.
I've also owned almost every lunchbox locker made - Aussie , Detroit , Lock-rite etc and I've worn-out or grenaded all but the Aussie. You might want to look at the warranty as well as there are tire size restrictions. It's also worth looking into the new Spartan locker .
You will find hundreds of threads online about a front locker in a TJ ad naseum. Some folks claim it's okay as long as you know it's there and know how it will react , while some say it will cause you to plow into a bus full of nuns and explode.
The only thing I can honestly say to you is that I'll personally take you for a ride and engage just my front locker( ARB) and we'll take a spin down the highway on some hard packed snow with some corners. You can make your decision after that.
