When I bought my '03 Rubicon in November I noticed that when I went over bumps like speed bumps or curbs I heard a very noticable knocking sound. I didn't think much of it as my Jeep had been inspected prior to purchase. Also this is my first Jeep and I thought the sound must be normal. It wasn't long after I bought the jeep that I noticed the sound stopped. I had done a service on it and I thought the sound must have been from a joint that had been lacking lube. I was under my jeep yesterday and I noticed that the ball joint that connects the the front sway bar to the rod from the axcle was broken. Judging by the condition of the rubber boot that normally covers the joint, it has been broken for awile. I asume that the sound I heard when I first bought the jeep was the worn ball joint and that when it stopped was when it finally let go. I am amazed that it has escaped my attention this long.
My question is; Do any of the sway bar disconnect kits out there eliminate this ball joint?
If I am going to replace the joint then I may as well replace it with a sway bar diconnect to help with flex while off road. I was quoted between $250-$500 from Tower Crysler before a wheel alignment which they insist must be done. If any one has any knowlege of this problem please feel free to advise me of my options.
Thanks,
Joshua
