Tell me your experience with a TJ auto vs manual
« on: June 19, 2005, 10:33:49 PM »
Im looking for a new jeep.

I want manual but its a pain in the arse

I want auto also.  less pain in the arse

I have auto in my truck now with 33" tires and i never had any problems with it at all going up anything.

But maybe in the jeep would be a different story? never had a YJ or TJ before so im not sure.

I just want to know if the auto 4spd is any good or not good enough.   Ill be spinning 33 tires probably

I know i should get manual but its a pain... Fun for a while then its a pain.

Any advice?

thanks

with the manual the down hill breaking saves lots of wear and tear. That and its less money i would think

I have the auto and I like it. I can drive much slower and with more control than the stick, especially over rocks and steep obstacles.  Going uphill is better, going downhill a stick is better.
All in all, I'd buy another auto.

I think you have answeared your own question. It sounds like you would be happier with an Auto.

Myself, I would pick a manual transmission all the time, whenever I buy a new vehicle, I always look for a stick first off. But sometimes  end up buying an Automatic.
The best choice in a jeep?? I think it is whatever you get used to.There are advantages to and disadvantages both ways. You will adjust the way you drive to the way your vehicle behaves.
Buy the vehicle  that you will be happiest with in the long run
Come out on  a run, maybe you will be able to talk someone in to exchanging vehicles for a while while off road, then maybe you could get a chance to "test drive" an auto and a stick.
I used to have an open mind but my brains kept falling out.

my real concern is power.

With the auto will it be able to spin 33" tires on the highway in Overdrive?

I know it depends on gears and stuff but will a stock auto with 3.07 gears
have enough juice for 33"

Im trying to get one that has 3.73 gears allready. If i can find one that is..

If its not enough power then thats where a stick would be better for that extra little power

Thanks for the info guys

Most auto came with 3.73 and sticks have 4.10 I beleive.  I have 3.73 with auto and for trail riding its fine but on road it is terrible.  I am  ordering new gears this week.

Cal, I'm running 33's with 3.07 gearsets on manual. Granted it sucks AT TIMES on the trail, but OVER ALL it is not unbearable. I'm sure there are people that would say I am #$%@'ing idiot for saying such a thing but i'm sticking by my guns on this one.  Don't expect to find 5th gear on the highway... unless you are going downhill and/or drafting a semi. On the trail, don't expect to show any 'finess' through sections that need it.

Yes, my 3.07 are sluggish in the bottom of the gears.  I can still have fun with them though. That's the point right? It doesn't have to be perfect to have fun.  4.10s or better would be great but the bank doesn't seem to think so. We all can't have air locked D44 front and rear with 4.56s on 35's. You gotta enjoy what you got right?

Just my three cents

I have 3:55 gears with 33 tires and a V8 auto

If theres no wind against me OD works fine.

Cant imagine with 3.07 gears with a 6cyl auto

I had a Stock cherokee  4.0L before with auto. It hauled arse.  But it had stock tires on it whatever they were..  not sure what gears were in it.  Cooling sucks in XJs so i got rid of it.
