05 LJ, No Crank, No Start
« on: November 14, 2013, 10:08:13 AM »
Just when I was about to buy a new windshield..!!   Turn key, power on, no cranking or starter noise. Battery is new, starter is newer... I hear this is an issue with some TJ's.. any thoughts on a quick fix..??   >:(

disconnect the batt for a bit then try again? I had a similar problem with my bmw and it turned out the keys needed to be reprogrmed

Do you have any power?  Lights, but no crank?

Full power  etc.  Just nothing when key turned to start. Fuel pump etc can be heard but not a crank. Starter and battery etc all good.

Confirm your fuses are good. Then make sure your starter has power on crank. Then confirm neutral safety switch.

Check your neutral safety switch, sometimes just jiggling the shifter can get things sorted.

Fuses Good, Power to starter on Crank...  ( not to be confused with Mayor on Crack )...  I have a feeling it may be the hidden switch in the ignition. Something about a broken bit of plastic that moves a metal thing to make the connection.  ????  There is a video on Youtube where a guy installs a starter button to by pass this glitch.....  May be the root to go to avoid a heavy repair bill or some mechanic swapping parts out and taking fun money away from the Jeep...!!!   Still a squirt off though.. I can't get to repairs until monday now anyway.   8)

Well I hit a wall, tried almost every trick I can think of.  Full power every where it needs to be, but still won't crank or click.  Anyone wanna buy a wounded LJ..... aaahhhh

Ave you tried starting it with a jumper button on the starter motor, bypassing the key? If so does it turn over then?
Have you check the fuseable link? I had a vw that blew the link, power went threw in with a meter/test light but not enough to amps/voltage  were allowed to go thru. Same kinda deal/issue that you have right now. It was in the power line to the starter, just a thicker portion up near the battery. I cut out the link and terminated it to the battery, no more issues.

You can only go so far on spinning the starter with a jump or smacking it with a hammer and hoping for the best.  All these little issues add up,but one hour with the top off the Jeep in the summer makes it all worth while...!!!
