93 Xj stereo troubles
« on: December 21, 2013, 10:04:28 PM »
I just bought myself a 93 Cherokee, (2nd Cherokee I've owned) and the stereo was removed. Thought no problem I'll just throw in a new one. I installed a new one but no sound. Before I start here I'd like to say that I am a mechanic and yes the fuses are good, unit turns on and has memory, speakers are wired correctly, speakers are not blown, wires have good continuity between plug and plug in at back of head unit, thought maybe the head unit was DOA so swapped it out for a 2nd brand new one from the store still no sound on AM/FM, AUX, or CD. There are only 2 things that have crossed my mind, 1) there is a factory amp (never heard of it in a Cherokee, maybe a GC) and 2) there's an aftermarket car alarm, heard of those killing the stereo before but typically not just the sound. If anyone can throw a suggestion my way it would be greatly appreciated.

Have you used your multi meter to check wires before and after the harness? Could be a faulty harness. Also continuity doesn't always mean a good circuit. You could have a high resistance short. Continuity would pass but not voltage (unlikely, but could be a issue). Have you popped the speakers with a single battery? I would also check the settings on the deck, some models came with an option to turn the speaker leads off if you are running an external amp (I've never seen this function on from the factory though). If you have continuity from speaker lead to the deck then there is no external amp. Also is the deck getting a full 12v on the constant lead? I personally would pull the deck out and make a couple jumper wires for ground and one to connect constant and ignition and hook up an external house speaker to eliminate the xj from the situation if you still don't get sound this way than you know it's the deck. The store could have been given a bad shipment. Just some suggestions.

what shape was the factory wiring harness in? what wires did you hook the unit up to in the dash? off the top of my head the speaker wires in the factory harness for the speakers in the front are (purple and purple with tracer, possibly blue) for one side and (dark blue and dark blue with tracer possibly orange) for the other. methinks  blue is for right channel, cant remember exactly. There is no factory amp or anything else in the speaker lines, cant see a properly installed alarm or car starter being hooked into those lines for any reason so that should not be the problem. have you pulled a door speaker to see what shape they are in? got an old stereo to test them?

I just finished installing a Alpine deck in my 01 XJ. Works great. Did you get the right harness to connect the factory wiring to your new deck? When I bought mine they gave me the wrong harness, I had to tell them it wasn't the correct one.
