Subwoofer doesn't work
« on: January 08, 2014, 09:59:19 PM »
OK, I'm just post all of my TJ problems, because the help on the last one was awesome:

2001 TJ 5L

For the last two years, I haven't used the stereo in the Jeep because the sub was cutting in and out and I can't listen to Brittany or Disturbed that flat.  Well, with Brittany, it didn't make a difference.  I bought a new deck (another JVC with the same harnessing) thinking that it was the deck.  This didn't help.  I would get bass and then flat - rinse and repeat.  I tried to Fonz it (ehhhhhhhhhh), no dice.  Finally after a while, there was no bass at all.

I rechecked the "harness" for the deck (slides into a metal chassis), used compressed air to blow out any debris and checked the fuse.  There is no change if I hit a bump.  I haven't taken apart the console.

So, yes, I should take out my multimetre and test the links, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and can quickly point me in the right direction.  I'm an Enron day-trader and I need to keep an eye on my investment.

I think hes talking factory..  I would believe the amp is on its way.. not the sub.. the sub would not cut out like that.. the amp would.

It's factory...  Are you talking about the JVC amp or the sub one?  I didn't know that there was one...

There's a factory amp wired to the sub.. and if it's cutting out am pretty sure that would be the amp

Thanks Dude!  I'll tear apart the console and take a look.  From the previous owner, I found a really old beaten and broken CD around the e-brake housing, so there might be something else in there...  It was a slow deterioration of the sub, which no longer works.   Could be a bad connection.  Is the amp readily available as a part that I can buy?

It's an easy teardown, just haven't had the b@lls to work around my main source of e-braking.  If I mess it up, I won't drive as awesome.  Drifting impresses the chicks...

Factory TJ subs are known for going out....if you have a factory ish set up, as in factory sub.....replace the sub itself. The amp is virtually non existent as I remember...something about it being attached to the factory sub. Therefore you have to change the whole thing....unless you like sawing plastic

Thanks!  I put up a Wanted post for one.  I know that I could buy something better, but whatever...  Don't wanna spend the money on something that I would use maybe 3 hours a week...

i know when i put an aftermarket deck in mine with the adapter harness it connected my power wire to the power antenna wire so the sub would only work on radio. just had to move one wire and it worked for me. i upgraded mine to the 6.5" kicker cvt and its pretty good for its size. run off a 200 or 300 watt amp(cant remember)
