Cat Back

I am planning on doing a cat back system before the end of the month and I was hoping to get some feedback.

Clearly i am not going to get a HUGE boost of power from any kit, so I basically looking for a tough, good priced, excellent sounding kit. The two I am looking at are the Magnaflow and the Borla Cat Backs. I was wondering if anyone had any opinion on these or any other kit.

These forums have been too quiet lately.   Time for some noise.  :twisted:

The offroad community has an image problem brought on to a large degree by the infamous May 24 long-weekend party bunch.  The general public has been fed media information which ties that week-end with anything off-road.  Those of us who off-road know they are two separate issues, but the general public does not.  We all want to do something to help our off-road causes.  If your definition of sweet could be the general publics definition of noise, then perhaps you should re-think your project.

i've heard some probs about the 97-02 borla headers fitting properly. but seeing as how you are only doing cat back... go with anything that has a high flow. Keep the cat please... for all our sakes. If you want that sound... buy a dump valve.

Both my dad and I are currently running Dynamax Super Turbo mufflers.  Then the muffler shop just bend a piece for us.  The power and mpg increase was quite noticable.  However, if you are doing this I would recommend increase the pipe diameter to at least 2.25" or go with 2.5".  Well worth the money

He didn't mention anything about citching the cat... he said cat back, that is leaving the cat in place and replacing the muffler and tailpipe.

Anywho, just go to Calgary muffler and have them custom fab the cat back with their super z for cheaper, same performance, and an in town warranty that costs less.

Thanks for clarifying that the cat is staying on, at least till i decide to do headers and a hi-flow cat. In that sense, it sucks to hear that the borla headers have had fitting problems, cause those are what i was looking at.

Dragonmaster, how much will calgary muffler charge for something like that. Cause i cant see a custom install going for less than a $550 Magnaflow kit.

Give them a call you might be surprised, local shops can be very economical sometimes.  Especially when you factor in the shipping costs required to get some of the stuff across the border.

I had the guys at Fast Muffler Man on 17th ave (Forest Lawn) do mine. They installed a Flow-Pro muffler and a 12" tip for $300.00 Sounds throaty but not stupid noisy. I do notice a slight increase in power but not alot.

the borla glitch was short lived. so long as you aren't buying used you should be fine. anything would be a significant improvement over stock. borla, banks, magna... plumbing pipe. anything.

Several years ago I upgraded the exhaust on my Mazda 626. Cat was ditched, 2" pipe from the exhaust manifold back to a high flow muffler.  K&N filter added.  Noticeable improvement in a freer revving engine, easier to run at high speeds on the highway and throaty exhaust sounds.  It was alittle too loud, stereo was less effective and the kids in the back seat complained about the noise at speed.  I added a straight through resonator where the cat used to be and it quieted it down enough to be fine with no loss in performance.

Featherfoot, if the 4x4 image is a problem, then the big tires, lift, bumpers and winch all are part of the image problem - they identify us as the redneck hell raisers some think we are.  Do you think we should convert our rides back to stock so that we won't stand out?  Alittle more noise/rumble is certainly no worse than the image of a well kitted 4x4.

I'll second the guys at Calgary Muffler. I went to them last summer after a recommendation on this board. Great service, fast too.

Oh, and for another $0.02 a high-flow cat is a waste of money. A modern cat flows more than you need already with almost no restiction. Note that I said "modern" it was a different story with older catalytic designs.
