cold weather killing my jeep :(
« on: February 05, 2014, 11:22:26 AM »
Hey  guys, this winter is killing my jeep I think and I don't think im going to see 300k from her :( went to start it up right now it wouldn't start I jumped it and it started right away, let her sit for a bit then went on a slow drive to get the oil turning in my gears and every thing as I work in a few hrs.

Jeep warmed up and every thing, no check engine light other then my o2 sensor that comes and goes when ever it wants too, I went behind my jeep and noticed that the muffler is puffing, as if its clogged or something have it gas and a lot of smoke comes out im not sure if its smoke or just of the cold weather and I think theres a hint of blue but im not sure cant really tell.

If I let her idle its normal but the muffler is puffing also the RPMs are normal oil pressure is above half then if I press the gas a lot of smoke comes out any ideas? would it be just soo cold that carp isn't working like it should or is my engine telling me to replace him?

Im running the Rotella shell oil, im thinking of  switching back to 10/30 oil

any ideas? thanks

What weight of rotella are you using...?

I only use 10W30 in the summer...why would you want to use thicker crap in the winter?

The I6 asks for 5w30... stick with that.

Dom that's actually only half correct. I run 15/40 in mine and she starts fine even now. Owners manual states. "SAE 10w-30 preferred". Note it does recommend 5-30 for below -18. But 3° should not make that much of a difference. Moe, he is correct in saying you have other issues and you should diagnose those as well. If you are burning 4l of oil you have MAJOR issues. Most likely rings or a major issue with your valves. It is time to pick up a compression tester. I'd lend you mine but its in storage with the rest of my tools.
PS if your o2 is bad change it you'll get your money back in gas milage.
Also if you are needing to jump your jeep. Then you have a problem with your charging system. Check your battery and alternator. That has nothing to do with oil viscosity. When oil gets cold it gets thicker and the engine will turn over slower. Not... not turnover.
Also has your oil burning slowed with the thicker oil. I'd rather live with a slower turning starter/using block heater, than pay for an engine

There is something major going on, I have parked the jeep :( its smoking a lot and I mean a lot  the engine is sluggish  and I lost almost half a tank of gas just coming home from work last night.

The smoking coming from the muffler smells like unburnt gas its white smoke not blue or any other color , when in idle the muffler puffs smoke its not constant, I got also when I came to drive it I had to over rev a bit for the engine to run better, then I got a check engine light I plugged in the reader and it said the TPS p0121 or something code I cleared it and it didn't come back again.

Came to a store light and the engine was struggling to keep rpms up.

All this problems just happened yesterday after I cold started it, iv had the oil in there for over a week now, it is thick oil, and takes a bit to circulate my check gages came on just for a split second when I started it yesterday, then I drove it around the block at a slow pace tell it warmed up fully  that's when I noticed the smoke and stuff

I'll give you $400.
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

Could be worn rings in that 3rd cylinder, which would explain the loss of oil to some extent.. The plug your concerned about on the far right looks like its firing correctly. They should not be wet. Troubleshoot a bit more, and dont bother reinstalling those fouled plugs. If you can get Champion 4412 truck plugs they run pretty well in a 4l. Otherwise ive had decent luck with the Autolite replacements as well. That 3rd plug could also be due to an incorrect mixture. How clean is your air filter? You did mention you smelled unburnt gas, it could be too rich... Computer controls all that, but you can check your air filter and make sure its not plugged. Id go have a shop check your compression on that cylinder as well, if your rings are shot that will lead to the oil loss and fouling. However it would be wise to find the cause of the problem before you throw new plugs in there, or do any more damage to your motor driving it.
I did a Google search for "hot trannies" but nothing came up about oil coolers  :o

Worrying too much about mpg with a Jeep is similar to worrying about your sister's virginity. An ok thing to be concerned about but...
