Buddy got told to get bigger fenders by cops
« on: March 21, 2014, 09:26:17 PM »
My bud just got a ticket today of 50$ to get bigger fenders because it did not cover the tires fully .. he took the ticket and laughed.
but seriously I have never had a problem for this.. and I can 33s with spacers with stock fenders before.. I guess its just a matter of getting the only cop that is not meeting quota.. lol

more common than you think.
if you run mud flaps you can usually get away with it.

If your google-fu is strong enough, you can find the actual code on line...but fenders, mud flaps, driving lights, and bumper height are all limited/controlled in Alberta.

As I recall, the reader's digest version is that you are supposed to have full coverage of your tires by your fenders (the fenders are supposed to stick out farther than the tires) and your rear tires are supposed to have mudflaps that extend at least halfway down the tire. I've seen guys run without either one of those things for years without any issues....and I've also seen tickets issued to some guys for not having mud flaps even when they had full fender coverage. I'd say that part of it is luck of the draw, and part of it is not giving cops any reason to pull you over....or not cheesing them off after they pull you over.

Like Johnny says - mudflaps seem to be the antidote to most "tire coverage" relate tickets, and they are easy to take off before you head onto the trail. Your mileage may vary.

I was in the enforcement business for 25 yrs .  Mud flap tickets are what we call Chicken -crap tickets.  I pride myself in the fact that I never wrote one.  My son got one  from out of town peace Officer because a stone could get kicked up by his big tires, well all the stone chips I,ve ever had was from the average passenger car in font of me.  As for throwing up mud,   how much mud do you get on the roads?      Lame ticket

just run some big ole' flaps. make them removable. the uglier they are, the more reason a cop doesn't have to pull you over.  my tires stuck out way to far, but with the big ole' flaps on it was like, 'well at least he's trying' and thats enough most of the time. except on may long; when they have the 0 tolerance days you're likely screwed. i'm sure the officers don't like giving the tickets either.

as for rock chips; every one i've ever gotten came from a Civic or some other small car on the road ::)

+1. Like most times when Johnny says that the answer involves a "Big Ole'" anything, he is correct.

A set of mud flaps that are ugly and prominently displayed will get you out of most tire coverage tickets. Unless you are the sacrificial lamb that gets pulled over by the mole lady when they are doing a blitz. Then all of your charm and animal magnetism will fall flat on it's face.

Don't want a ticket? Follow the TSA.

Otherwise, pay to play and don't bitch if you get caught.

Will you please stop trying to apply logic, common sense, and adult reasoning to this debate? We're talking about Jeeps!

and you know what else?     My big tires are so heavily treaded I couldn't pick up a road rock and spit it out at the car behind me if I wanted too       .Just because its law doesn't make it  right  and this is from me ,  the ex- cop.  There s a by-law in Cochrane you can,t put your garbage out before 7 pm on the day before pick -up day    JEEEEEESSSSSSSuuuuuus    and your not allowed to hang your clothes on a clothes line to dry  ( only you old guys will know what that is)   Don't get me started   Man I gotta shake my head sometimes   Any way yeah if you wanna be legal   mud flaps will do the trick.    I think the general rule was 60 per cent rear coverage was good enough, if you needed total coverage your mud flaps would have to drag on the ground and no car would be  legal.
