Rear axle noise Danna 35
« on: May 21, 2014, 02:35:52 PM »
I am kind of like the guy that took his Caddy back to the shop for years about a noise on the passenger side... turned out to be a beer bottle in the heater duct with a note in it saying " you rich bastard you finally found the noise"!

For years had a 90 YJ that did the narrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr clump noise  on deceleration with a slight jar on the clump, turns out to be an spun axle shaft, if you accelerated the noise stopped.

Had the axle out a couple of years ago, the spines felt a little sharp then.

The noise is very loud now as in failure is coming soon.

The right answer is replace with a Danna 44.

My question is can I just replace the axle shaft or is there something in the carrier that needs or can be replaced?

The spider gears may be damage as well. Not overly difficult to do. There are a few sizes depending on the gear ratio and style of carrier though. I probably have some laying around. And should have a shaft.

If you do all that, good time to do the axle bearings since you are there. They are easy and cheap ;)

Bnine,

I have been chasing the noise for quite awhile.

I have upgraded from the flywheel to the rear axle, now have a NV 3550, 2 " tranny drop, SYE, Woods drive shaft and new bearings in the rear axle.

Bearings have been replaced in the front driveshaft.

Has a 2 inch lift and a 2 inch body lift with 33 inch tires.

The Dana 30 35 axle is 4.10 that is giving me about 2800 rpm (factory tach that had a 4 banger, now has a 4.2) at 60 mph (GPS).

Will wire in an after market tech and confirm.

Have a set of 3.55 axles from a 90 Cherokee, if I change the mounts to a YJ will that lower my RPM at 60 mph to make it worthwhile?

(also would solve the problem of chasing the noise in the rear end)

The YJ has a number of issues with the carb, distributor, electrical but the driveline issue is the biggest.

Just replaced the wiring to the front and rear lights with heavy 14 gauge trailer cable wire.

The rear end is chewed up with big chunks of metal laying on the bottom.

Started grinding off the brackets on the Cherokee Dana 35, then will weld on the YJ brackets.
