U-bolt question
« on: November 28, 2014, 10:47:21 AM »
Hope someone can help me out

Threw a TJ T-case into my YJ and went to put my front driveshaft back on and noticed the front yoke is a U-bolt not strap type, since the u-bolt yoke is stronger and getting the strap yoke off the old case will be a pain with it out of the vehicle I wanna keep the u-bolt yoke - problem is I don't have any u-bolts - I called Canmore Chrysler and the parts guy says all his TJ blow-up show straps - obviously I have 1310 ujounts so I need a part number for the U-bolts and nuts -

Anyone have a part number for those U-bolts and nuts (or an application that had them factory that I could give Mr. Parts Dude.

PS saw them on ebay but need my 4wd now since we have a couple feet of poo up here in the hills

Thanks

Did you try calling Dave at broken axle?

I know the 9" I got used a 1330 u joint with u bolts.  I believe a 1330 and a 1310 have the same size caps.  Try asking for a u bolt kit for a Ford F-150, 1976.

Good luck.

Edit

Be careful with ford u bolts, some 1330 ford u joints used 1 1/8" caps instead of 1 1/16" caps.

Just stop at pats driveline and grab some, or go to napa and have them pull some. There are only a few sizes.

Lock washer, locktie, and stoffer nuts.

U-bolts arent really stronger but they are better for a 4x4 as long as they stay tight. Which they usually dont unless you lock them up really good.

U-bolts are old tech, and straps are new tech for a reason.

The real reason we like them in theis industry is a broken bolt on a strap type leaves you stranded with no way to extract the busted bolt in the bush.

A broken u-bolt is a very easy trail repair.

Just ask for YJ u-bolts. They will work. Or CJ. Its all 1310 stuff at the case. And at the d30 for that matter. Just dont use the rear, a lot of YJ's came with a 1330 joint on the rear axle. Everytihng else is 1310.

Oh, last tip on u-bolts. Dont over tighten. It will deform the cap and cause the joint to fail prematurely. Difficulty keeping them tight, and people over tightening are the two of the main reasons industry moved to straps.

This is why ford in their infinite wisdom made 1330 u joint caps 1/16" bigger to prevent people from over torquing them and distorting the caps.

Thanks guys  - just gonna switch the t-case yoke back to a strap for now (and yep I have already been through extracting a couple bolts on the trail already) I will switch to u bolts once I have a yoke for the pinion end too - straps have distorted and failed on me twice so I'll try the u bolts

Made it into Napa in Canmore and they had a 1-1/16 kit sitting on the self, grabbed a couple new u joints while I was at it of course.

Bnine - I figure torquing by feel to about 15 foot lbs (about the same as a throttle body to manifold bolt) will get me in the ball park without deforming the cup - does that sound about right? - Oh yeah, and I'll use some grade 8 lockwashers and locktite instead grade 5 hardware it came with (I have half a box left over from doing my beadlocks anyway)

Thanks again for the advice
