went to look at a cherokee sport
« on: July 12, 2006, 09:38:38 PM »
i love the libby but... a friend mentioned a 97 cherokee sport for $1000 so i had to look.  turned out to be a '88 and $1200, no biggy.  booted it around, sigh was too much for me to handle.  gears seemed nice and the engine ran pretty well.

problems:

1. suspension shot.. rode like a buckboard, leaf springs were bending the wrong way.
2. putting the key in the door, the round key thing turned and fell out.
3. power drivers seat was sticking and clunking
4. rear wiper missing
5. fuel rail was leaking
6. grinding sound when going at slow enough speed to hear it, sounded like a sticking brake grinding but didnt feel a slowdown.  also had a burning clutch smell after driving a bit and it is automatic.
7. heat/air wasn't working, couldnt test.  could be switch or motor or fuse.. hard to tell.
8. oil was changed too recently - too clean for 260K so scary
9. tranny oil seemed too clean as well, plus had a wierd smell.
10. engine was washed on top but bottom and what i could see of all the driveline was quite wet and black.

i could easily fix everything over time, but was just too bad of shape, i don't want something that has to sit for months before i think it is safe and reliable to enough just to roll in the bush ya know.  i'd rather something i could drive nicely and build up.

im about 2/3 the way to having enough cash to frankenlift the libby with new 31's so wont be long before i make a decision.  not too concerned about summer wheeling, i really liked and think i would be more active during the winter :D

anyhoo Hi all, hope to see everyone on Saturday.

If you did get a beater XJ, would you keep the Liberty for daily use?

BTW, if you're going to order Al's arms with your Frankenlift if you get one, let me know. I'm thinking about getting some and we could share the cost of shipping.

heya stranger

definitely keeping the liberty.  drove it up on the lawn and cleaned her like she was new - then it just had to rain.  i haven't had one good bubble bath last more than a day, drives me nuts.

liberty will be getting lifted soon, so many different lifts out there now, i looked at the kj site.  but i'll go with the frankenlift since i know it's a guaranteed goodie and then first set of A/T tires, i'll buy some meats closer to winter i presume.

not sure how much Al's arms are, i'd like to get both the lift and arms at the same time then dont have to pay for 2 wheel alignments plus we can practice putting them on yours :D

post me a price and i'll let you know for sure when i can do it.... although i don't know how much a frankenlift is yet, like $700 US or some crazy thing.

Frankenlift was $850 US including shipping.

I think the arms are around $350.
