We are attempting to raise $ 160,000 for a new ultrasound machine for the Foothills Medical Centre which will help toguide the intraoperative decisions when liver and pancreas surgeries are performed.

This machine will improve the quality of life of people with cancer who could be treated with this new equipment. Thetechnology allows doctors to do laparoscopic ultrasound-guided surgery. Having the laparoscopic ultrasound equipment will allow surgeons to perform laparoscopic radiofrequency ablations. That is, they would be able to perform minimally invasive liver surgery. Tumors that are otherwise not operable could be burned with radiofrequency ablation. In other words, surgeons will be able to avoid the large incisions made in traditional types of surgery, which wouldtranslate to a shorter postoperative recovery period. The ultrasound machine would also be useful for a number of other groups, including neurosurgeons, endocrine surgeons, and possibly other surgical oncologists. Indeed, many members of the Department of Surgery would have an interest in this instrument.

To date through numerous hard working donors we are just over the halfway mark of achieving our goal of $160,000. With your help we can make this happen sooner ……
