Dana 18

I have 1970 CJ (building) with the single stick Dana 18. Right now have a weird shift pattern that starts with 4WD Low, then 4WD Low again, then neutral, and 2WD H all the way forward. This can’t be right. Changed linkage adjuster from one extreme to other but no change. Linkage looks right from pics I’ve seen. Any ideas from builders who have worked on these appreciated. Assuming can’t be internal & must be something in linkage. Should be 4wL 4wH N 2wH.

Easiest to use a 3rd party hosting site and link the picture. Photobucket works....
if we were smart with our money we wouldn't own Jeeps.

Something must be off with shifter. If it goes into 2 hi, but directly to 4 low and not 4 hi then something must be out of adjustment. Not sure how much adjustment is in that shifter though. Been a while since I’ve looked at one closely.
If something is bent or broken it may be worth your time to upgrade to a twin stick.

Thanks, yes the single stick on the Dana 18 is definitely a Rube Goldberg setup. It was unhooked when I got the Jeep and could only find one or two pics on the web that showed it. Pretty sure it is hooked up right but expect the problem is there. Don’t see any evidence of anything broken or bent. Can’t see an internal prob with the TC but hoping that at least someone could rule that out for sure. Never seen this before. My ‘53 had twin sticks and way easier. Just don’t want to switch things out and then find out the TC is the problem. Don’t have a lot of the prehistory on this Jeep so been slowly going through everything piece by piece this winter. Maybe just an IQ test thing for me but not many around who have worked on these. So far, new bumper w/tire carrier, new Jaz fuel cell and lines, complete rewire and gauges, ceramic coat on old headers, electric choke and just a ton of little things. But this TC thing has got me scratching for sure. Oh, and I’ll figure out the photo thing.

Have confirmed that transfer case is 4L, 2L, N, 2H so no 4H but has a 2L instead. PO must have done this on purpose and might be useful so going to keep it this way. Has a warn overdrive so the 2L will be useful.
Thanks all for reviewing this head scratcher.
