Waiparous run April 17
« on: April 06, 2021, 09:15:03 PM »
I was looking at some trails out in Waiparous and was hoping some other people might be interested. I was thinking maybe trail 51 coming out at 119, maybe some others, I don’t know the area too well haha.

That would be lost knife trail. Very well used trail, and can be a lot of fun at this time of year. The section from 93-119 might be a little slippery on the down slopes. Hopefully melted by then.
I should be good to join. I can confirm the week before.

Hi there, new to Calgary and the wife and I would be interested in going on a trail ride. Been a while since I've done the Jeep thing, the last Jeep I had was a 2005 LJ Rubicon I bought new and wheeled in Ottawa. Just picked up a new leftover 2020 JL a couple weeks ago and have started with some basic mods to hit the trails with.

What type of comms do you guys use? FRS, GMRS, HAM? I need to pick up something, just not sure what is most common around here.

Welcome.
Most of the guys around here use FRS/GMRS. A lot of the club members use the Baofeng UV92 hand held radios that are pre programmed to FRS channel 13 and GMRS channel 1

I ran the Midland radios this weekend in Limestone. (The ones you can get at Costco) They worked really well, and can charge from micro USB, and you don't need to set them up

The GMRS has some channels that overlap FRS. Cabela's sells Midland ones too. Curious to see which model you were using, I was going to go take a look at them tomorrow at Cabela's, maybe I'll look at Costco too.

I think down the road I'll add a midland MTX 275 to the Jeep for better range. I like that you can store the guts of it out of the way and just control everything from the Mic.

I have the MTX 275, it’s definitely a nice radio.

This is them $109:
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01LVUBPPA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Costco Has them for 150, so just shop around
https://www.costco.ca/midland-t77vp5-x-talker-extreme-2-way-radio-kit%2c-2-pack.product.100362567.html

They were full GMRS Radios, I haven't done any testing with them yet for range, will this spring though

Are they strictly GMRS? Or do they work with FRS as well? The reason I ask is because I already have the Midland MTX 275 which is strictly GMRS which I didn’t realize until after I installed it.

Looks like they are frs but you can communicate with gmrs on the channels they overlap. Midland sells another line that has the gmrs channels as well but I can’t find them In Canada. Maybe they run a higher output.

I was just at the Costco the NW and they only had the Motorola t473 (3 pack of the the t470) for $99 with all the bbq/ summer stuff. I might run up the the one at cross iron and See what they have
