2.5L Engine Removal Questions
« on: September 09, 2006, 11:51:28 AM »
Few questions that need answering, pertaining to swapping a 2.5L Jeep TJ Engine.  I only have 3 things to attend to before I'm ready to pull  my engine, and they seem pretty straight forward but I have been having a hell of a time with each of them; and require some advice from more knowledgeable jeepers.    Any help or ideas on any of these questions would be greatly appreciated.

1)Transfer Case Shifter & linkage.
How exactly do I disconnect the transfer case linkage from the transfer case, I seem to be un-able to reach one bolt on the transfer case, where the bracket is attached to??

I tried to take the bracket off from the body (Under tub) but stopped when I noticed it had, spacers (washers) that seemed to be there for alignment purposes.  And also even if I did take it off here, I still need to either diconnect the linkage or remove the bracket from the Transfer case still...

Is there a way to disconnect the linkage and leave the two brackets where they are?  (On the tub under the drivers side & One on the top of the transfercase drive side....?

2)Rear Drive Shaft U-Joint & Drive Shaft
I have been having a hell of a time, trying to take the 1st rear u-joint a part. It seems to have become stuck when the grease nipple broke off   . And I am unable to press the joing the other way since the tool will not fit since the tub is in the way.
So.....

I disconnected the rear drive shaft from the second u-joint (By removing the 4 bolts), and plan to address this problem when I pull the whole works out (Engine, Transmission, Transfer Case & Rear Drive shaft).  Where it will make working on it much easier.

a)Will pulling the drive shaft out with the engine and the rest of components, mess anything up when I try to put it back together? (Vibrations etc)

b)Will my 2 1/2 ton Engine hoist be able to support the Engine. Transmission, Transfer Case & Drive shaft?

3)Exhaust Hanger (attached to transfer case/Transmission)
How dose one disconnect the exhaust hanger from the Transfer case?
It looks like it just slips into the hanger and should just slip out, but this dose not seem to be the case, and it will not budge...

I tryed taking the 4 bolts which seem to be holding the Hanger bracket to the transfer case but have had no luck.  using the breaker bar I seem to be twisting & moving the whole transfer case & transmission...

Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.

Pull the bracket off the transfer case, should be eaily doable.

The tranny shifter requires you to lift a rubber boot and then reach inside the shift tower and push the ball retaining cup down and twist, the shifter should lift up enough to pull after that.

Rear dirve shaft, pull the straps off the pininion and then just slide the shaft out of the protective boot and leave the u-joints in tact untill you can throw it on a bench and have full access.

Exhaust hanger is part of the transmission/transfercase mount  you need to pull the skid plate and support the works then unbolt it from the transmission then it will slide off.
