Largest Tire Size possibly on a Stock 97 TJ Sahara ?
« on: September 19, 2006, 01:09:52 PM »
Hey all,

Looking for some help.
I have fairly stock 97 Sahara with the original size 30.5 all the way around. I don't want any extra wear and tear on any parts, So i'm not looking at cutting anything or replacing anything. Sorry, not putting 35's on it.  BUT, will 32's or 33's Fit Normally without ANY adjustments on a stock jeep, without causing wear on the axles or bearings or anything else.

Any help, or experience with the wrong choices would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks !

Sorry Strong, but you ask a question this loaded, what were you expecting.

So, since the straight forward made you sour, I'll explain it.

The largest tire you can fit on a stock jeep without clearence issues are the ones you have. Even Rubicon 31 inch tires rub.

Any tire larger then what you have will cause your balljoints, axle u joints, unit bearings, tie rod, draglink, steering stabilizer and credit card to wear out faster then if you leave the stock size on there.

There is no free lunch.

This is kind of a given. Since you originally did not take the time to think that question through. I did not originally take the time to explain the obvious. See Im sarcastic too

A 31 inch tire will not make a huge difference, but things will wear faster

A 33 will be quite noticable

35's can tear front ends apart on a monthly basis when 4 wheeling is added to the equation.

Now if you were to ask how much extra wear is involved with larger tires and what not, you probably would have started a discussion.

But you specifically stated, "I dont want extra wear". The simple answer Strong is

No, you can not put larger tires on your rig without expecting to increase maintenance frequency.

Sorry

Thanks Bnine,
Its not about me being sour, but your answer didn't tell me anything.

I do appreciate you responding, but I do like to know why I can't do something.  Your second response at least told me why. Its a case of Rubbing. Cool. Thats pretty much what I needed to know.

Thanks, and I do appreciate your help.

Isn't the 97 the same as the 02 TJ?  If it is I have 31's with no problem at all.  I don't get any rubbing at all and don't notice any extra wear.

You could always add a 3" body lift, they are relitivly cheap and easy to install, and I do belive that an extra 3 inches will clear 33's on a TJ (just a guess, as I own an XJ)

but your signature says you have a 2" budget boost, that is probably why you are not rubbing.

I tried asking in the sticky thread, but my guess is that no one noticed...so i figured i would resurrect this one quick...

How much rubbing would be expected in a stock TJ with 31s...say if it was only road driven till a budget boost was put on? I am guessing it really on rubs when flexed or turned very hard?

If you add about .5 inch of bumpstop on the front, not rubbage whatsoever.

Flat washers between the cup and tower will do the trick.
