My ZJ came with an Up Country suspension (almost like a 1" factory lift ) that included skid plates for the transfer and gas tank. I am able to run 31's with minimal trimming.
The Up Country came on some Limited models, and a lot of guys don't even know they have it. If you have skids and a hitch, and it's a limited, chances are you have the Up Country.
With the longer wheel base, I'd suggest the skids for sure. Nothing like punching a hole in one of those gas tankson the trail.
