duel batteries

so im installing a winch to the jepp and would like to run it off a second battery. just wondering there is any info and doing this or if there are simple kits to do the install.

What kind of jeep, what kind of winch, and what kind of batteries?

A quality yellow top will go farther then two low quality normal batteries.

Two quality yellowtops just give you the power to burn out your winch.

Dual batteries are over rated in my opinion, especially on lightweight rigs like jeeps.

Unless you need them for a kickin system of course  :wink:  :wink:

I can Probly do it myself, But time is always an issue with me.  I drive truck so I'm gone alot then when I get back I ussually have a large honeydo list!

Tell me how you would be able to burn out your winch.  A winch will only draw as much current as it requires.

probably just means you will use your winch longer then u should because of the all the extra juice you will have.

Tell me how you would be able to burn out your winch.  A winch will only draw as much current as it requires.

Winches get hot. Unless you have a 1400$ winch with its own thermal shutdown, you can easily COOK a winch.

Ask 2 out of three champion owners. Those are sensitive to being over worked.

The motor gets hot the more, and harder you pull.

Most the time you are limited by a single battery and stock alternator. Which typically can not pull long enough to cause to much heat and burn up a winch motor.

BUT. Add in 3 times the battery power with something like a pair of high powered optimas, see how long you can winch for, and how fast you can burn out a winch.

Modern day, 1400$ winches have thermal shutdowns for a reason. To stop overzealous wheelers from hooking up 2 CAT batteries and a 200amp alternator to their winch. Yarding their PoS across a 200' muskeg feild without stopping, then wondering why their winch wont reel in  :roll:  :roll:

I would caution anyone not running an 8274 or thermal warn before installing dual batteries.

Hope you have a snorkle cause on most Jeeps if the winch selonoid pack is under water, so is the air box intake. Meaning the motor isn't running and neither is the winch.  :roll:

That's my #1 reaason for not going hydraulic(or PTO). I've winched out of mud holes before when the engine wouldn't/couldn't be run. Also had my old truck on such a bad angle once that the carb flooded out. Had to use the winch to straighten out so the motor could get restarted. Not really a problem now with FI unless I rolled right over.
