Out of curiosity if I were to convert from a disconnect passenger side axle to a non-disconnect axle would I have to put a seal in the pumpkin or could I temporary get away without it and use the seal at the shift fork.  Obviously I would have to remove the shift fork.

Im pretty sure those shafts are a different diameter if I remember right. The two peice is larger because of where they join up.

Most likely it would leak like a sieve.

Stu's site has part numbers for both seals you need to replace.

They are both pretty easy.

All you need is your 35mm socket, a pry bar, block of wood, and a longnose flat tip punch.

I thought the shafts were the same diameter.  The splines at the collar are a lot bigger, but I am pretty sure the shaft size is the same.  I will have to look into it further

Even if the shafts neck down to TJ diameter, the seal probably rides on the fat part, and thats why they it needs to be changed.

I've changed the seals a lot, but never took the time to note what part of the shaft rides in it. But, I dont imagine the writes would tell you to swap seals if you didnt need to.

Or you can just try it. If it psses on you, you know you need to change the seals.

I would just do it properly and put the seal in the pumpkin. CR11800

Only takes about 1hr or so to do.

I would do this right now then goto jeepstuff and get a spare.

I have a spare for every corner.

I think i paid $70 for each front axle. they come with the ujoint and inner and outer stub.


Plus changing to a 1 piece will make it stronger.

It does make it stronger, but the YJ front driveshaft is not balanced so you tend to get vibration in the front.  I am happy with my setup right now and I already have the larger u-joints, so it would not be a huge improvement
