My heater went today.  Is there a heater upgrade that can be done, or just replace it with the OEM?

Your fan or heater core? If it's the core did you do an oops and hit the heater hoses/pipes where they go into the firewall and crack the fittings when you were doing your battery mod?

Is it the fan motor that went? If so going to one from a Chev pickup is a great upgrade. Sorry don't know the particulars just heard good things from some that have done it.

It's the fan, not the core.  When I bought it only the heat would work, which isn't an issue in the summer with the top off.  Today, drove to work in Rocky, turned the fan off, and it wouldn't turn on again.

I know I didn't hit anything when doing the battery mod, although you get bonus points for guessing that.  :)

I have seen write ups for replacing the blower with one from a chev, but the ones I saw all said pre-95 Yj's, and didn't know if it worked in newer ones.

stupid question. Does the heat/fan work when set on high? I know there's a resistor that eventually blows and prevents the fan from blowing on anything but high. Just a thought.

No, she's toast for blowing on any setting right now.  Nothing at all.

And not a stupid question - there's always little glitches like that that are specific to these types of parts. ;)

That's a good idea.  My plan was to take the fan out and play with it, as I rebuilt the blower motor in my Mercedes 300SD last winter.

But barring that, I was going to upgrade it if I could - does anyone know for sure if the Chev blowers will fit?

heheh thanks. We get this alot at work- not enough information or history when the car comes in so sometimes we are left guessing. And then later the customer says "oh ya, last week it did this" or "I was doing something to that and now this doesn't work".

Have you checked the fuses and conectors to the fan motor? Also try tapping the fan motor with a small hammer. If it starts up then replace the motor.

Also, people say a chevy fan is an upgrade for a YJ. I have no prob with the stock fan blowing enough air. The main problem is all the air is mostly all to the floor. I made some air deflectors to deflect  most of the air from the floor vents upward and rearward between the seats. Ten times better heat now, and I'm not even going to go though the hassle of putting on the hard top this year.

I upgraded mine last year...The chev motor sure puts out! The only thing you have to do is cut the hole in the fire wall a bit bigger... without the right tools it can be a bit of a pain. Mine was pretty hack, but some rtv sealent cleaned it up a bit haha. If you DO have a broken motor and have to take it all apart anyways it is $20 well spent. I wouldnt overly bother doing it unless your 100% sure that it is the motor that is broken.

Like said above your best bet for heat is deflecting the air away/around of the transmission hump part of the floor. I also did that at the same time...

I took a piece of corrigated plastic (the stuff use for cold air returns on newer houses), cut it out to fit the bottom outlet, and glued it on. I cut two holes for 2" pvc (90 degree pieces) pipe in it, one pointing each direction. This works really well.

Also if you dont use your back seats often, go buy a wind jammer and put that in...

Sounds good.  I figured on the firewall hole anyway.

Thanks for the help guys.

Okay, blower is out, and I'm looking at the two of them and kinda stumped.

The old one has a red and black wire set coming out from the inside to a plug, and the newer Chevy one has a single brass tab to wire into.

How do I wire up the new one?

Thanks.
