Clutch Replacement
« on: July 11, 2005, 03:09:51 PM »
Alright, so the clutch is so worn, now i cant even get it into gear.  So i have to get a friend to push me from the side of my road, up my driveway and into my garage with his jeep so i can drop the tranny and do the clutch replacement.
Question though, this is my first time doing the clutch by myself.  Ive been under many times, but not for this job.  In fact, the clutch is one thing that i have never known much about.  What parts do i need to replace really?  I called partsource and they are ordering me in a new clutch for $105, but he said it doesnt include a pressure something and something else, cant remember, and he mumbled. So is that all i need? im pretty sure everything else is in good shape, slave, lines, etc.  Its for a 88 yj if anyones curious.  Thanks guys

If you are in there you should replace the clutch disk, pressure plate, throw-out bearing (release bearing), and pilot bushing.  The pilot bushing is not as critical but if you are in there you should.  I just did mine in february for a 95 YJ and my parts ranged from $175-200.  Also I have an external slave so mine was a little different than yours.

Basically remove all hoses and electrical, unbolt the bellhousing, and remove.  For install do the opposite.  You will need to bleed you clutch system.  Also if you don't have a tranny jack you may want to remove the t-case first to lighten the load.  When I did mine in feb. it was my first as well and it was a pretty easy job just time consuming
