axle wrap i think
« on: November 27, 2006, 10:47:18 PM »
Hello,
Just past few days (since the icy and snowy roads) I've been getting some pretty bad hopping in 2wd. So this is called axle wrap correct? Could someone please explain whats hapenning and how to fix it. Its a 97 TJ with 4.5" lift and SYE.

I tried using the search function but didn't find much......

Incase loose bolts are the problem I just recently (end of Oct) checked all my bolts and found one loose lower front control arm.

Thank you
Tyler

Check your rear track bar, that is what prevents axle wrap.  However if the bolt is loose or the bushing is shot then it will make some noise

Might make sense if you drove an old square light hay wagon on leafs, and didnt have 4 solid controls to control axle wrap

You control arms completely limit your axle wrap. Thats one advantage to a link suspenion versus leafs.

Anyways, you are getting wheel hop in snowy situations? You start spinning then you rear end start wanting to hop?

Its one of two things. If you do have axle wrap, (have someone watch you pinion when you are hoping so you find out) you can only get it through the control arms on a link setup. Loose hardware, bad bushings, etc etc etc. At most yours may have loose hardware, I doubt your bushings would already be shot.

Other one, and most likely one, is the suspension geometry. Some wheel hop is pretty common on short arm lifted TJ's.

If its worse then what Im thinking, or you want me to double check it, bring it by one of these night and we can take it for a ride.

That would likely be it.  Bills dead on.   Too high of antisquat in the rear suspension.  Not to mention what a short arm lift does to instant center.

This wheel hop is a completely different creature from axle wrap.

Trackbars job is to locate the axle side to side in the jeep.  If it is link related it will be due to some of the 4 forward facing links.  Upper or lower, not the lateral facing trackbar.   Chances of enough of them going bad all at once are unlikely though.  It would take at least half of them.

Yeah, I should have clarified that.

You can get wheel hop as a result of bad axle wrap, like on most yota stock spring over rear axles.

But they are still two different things.

More often then not wheel hop is associated with suspension set up.

I thought it would make sense because i still have the wrong track bar bracket on.....

Anyway its exactly what u said bill, it hopes in snowy situations, i start spinning then the rear starts to hop......

So control arms eh....hmmmm...i just double check them the last week of Oct two were loose, went to Mclean Creek and nothing was hopping. That was the weekend before the crappy weather.....So could cold weather affect bolts??....It can't be bad bushings, everythings brand new.....

Well its bad enough that i have to ride the clutch out of a stop sign or keep it in 4wd.
