I managed to score an 81 on my Amateur Radio Basic Exam. So that means I passed "With Honours", and can operate in HF.

Another expensive hobby!

Soon to be VA6CPL! :D (But without a radio :()

I chose that one from the bevy of va6/ve6 callsigns available to Albertans.

The CPL just happens to be my initials.

I'm still a little bitter about my damn 79%. :)

Just waiting to see which callsign I'm getting, either VE6PPP or VA6RML.

Congrats, and we'll see you on the trail.

Congrats chris
It doen't have to be an expensive hobby

I am VE6IMH ,  my initials as well.

Calltrex. By getting an amateur radio license it enables you to use the various amatuer repeaters around the province, There is virtually no where you can go in Alberta that you can not hit a repeater. if you have a radio in your 4x4 you will always be able to call for help. Reeaters are linked together you can actually talk around the province and around the world to a certailn point.

The major use in off roading is the far greater range than CB's, If you broke down on the trail where there is no cell coverage, you can quite often transmit to a repeater that has a telephone interconnect therefroe being able to call for someone to bring you parts or even to call out emergency medical help.
I used to have an open mind but my brains kept falling out.

How much are these radios?

Do u have to pay for this service?

Well, a radio yes, a cb no. It can go in your jeep as a mobile rig, or it can be handheld, or it can sit on a desk. As for radio price, really, from around $200 to as much as you want to spend!
Pay, only to qualify yourself as a licensee. $20 for a qualification from Industry Canada, and a qualification is good for life.

www.radioworld.ca and click on amateur

Some of it may or may not make sense to you. But you'll get an idea.
