Do a Google search for "ZJ 231 swap".  You can find them for about $200 if you look hard enough.

Try the gear center for a rebuilt, or jeepstuff for used

Gear center 252-3880
Jeepstuff 681-5337

I could change it for you, if you want.

A rebuilt from gear center with 1 year warrenty shouldnt be more then 1500$. RnR is only 1-2hours.

If jeepstuff has one, it would probably be about 800.

Ya, dont spend the grand or 2 to replace it just do the swap to 231 and your good. If its even the TC. I would bet its something down the line, in the drive train. U joints even. My rig I thought it was the TC but in fact it was a messed up rear diff. Also be sure your fluids are topped up.

Jeepstuff will charge you alot for a used unit. $800 abouts. Just do the swap from full time 4wd (249) to part time 4wd (231)

Send a PM to Dan (cablesmurf).  I think the XJ 231 is different, and you need a TY or YJ 231 case.

Also, if you haven't yet, go to www.nagca.com

Lots of good info there.

if u have all wheel drive you have the 249..... if it is the 249, and you tcase is on its way out, the swap to a 242 is quite easy from the looks of it. i havne't done the swap yet but i will. its basically a direct swap. just have to make sure your imput shafts are the same. it'll be either 21 or 23 spline. if the 242 is different from your current 249 you can swap the sun gear and the input from the 249 into the 242 and it should all bolt right up.
i second the idea of goin to www.nagca.com. i'm on there all the time, lots of people have done these swaps.

Just a word of caution....they can be real pricks to newbies on there if you don't do a search first.  So search for "231 swap", and then ask specific technical questions instead of general.

Don't get me wrong, lots of good people on there.  Lots of idiots as well.

94 and earlier have a different gear cut on the planetary gears and the input shaft from 95 and up will not engage properly in the planetary (and vice versa). My 93 had a 95 249 in it and when I went to the 242 I had this problem. I ended up using my 95 249 front case, input and planetary with the rear case and all the guts from a 92 XJ 242 when I did my swap.
The 242 & 249 front case halves are almost identical and will bolt up with either back half. The 231 case is shaped different and will only swap with other 231s.
