I need a chainsaw, I know almost nothing about them. I won't be doing anything heavy duty with it, Take it out to clean up the trail when I'm out, take it camping, odds and ends around the house.

I have seen the Poulans at Canadian tire, they seem to be a decent price. Should I get one or should I pay a few more bucks for a Stihl or a husqvarna.

I know nothing about chain saw too, but from what I have seen on the trails, when I get one, I think I will spend the money on a decent one.  Nothing heavy-duty usually turns pretty quickly into oh poop, I wish I bought the better one.  It is amazing how tough some of those trees can be.

However, I am definitely interested in seeing what other people post.

I have a Stihl, it works really well, however sometimes it can be a little hard to start.  I think it needs a tune up.  Husqvarna & Stihl definitely rank tops in many of the top 10 saws according to Consumer Report (I was checking them out the other day).  I would say definitely buy a little better than you think you'll need.  Then again if you want one and want one cheap, Princess Auto often has sales on a few lesser known brands.

And think it's great!
Unbelievable power from such a compact saw, very reliable.

I looked at getting a new saw but I couldn't find one as compact as the Mac 110

The downside is lack of replacement parts.

Id stay away from that one.  I see those all the time in discount places and princess auto....  Im guessing they would not be a good thing to get.

Just my opinion.  Pay for what u get..

i inherited a chainsaw from my dad a few years ago...says stihl on the case, but i doubt it... 4 cylinder 2 stroke, thing'll cut through steel tubes.  i dunno about the bar length, but i'm guessing it's about 2 feet long.  all i know is that it's old and it rules!

I have a Poulan with a 16" blade.. it's been doing very well for me. It's a 2 stroke engine... you have to keep it nice and clean. For what I do ..It's the best bang for the $$$... I would not spend $500 on a chain saw... no F way! I'm only shopping fire wood and cutting down trees on trail .

Ian... you have to ask yourself one question... What are you gonna do with it? If you want to become a fulltime "lumber Jacques" :wink: ... It would be wise to spend $500+ for a Husqvarna or Stihl. I paid $160 for my Poulan.. I had it for 4.5 years now and I love it...

hehe but yea it performed very well tonight on the trail.  wasn't too big, though Dom might have lost a pound or two.  i'd get one like it for size and price for sure.

I have a Poulan as well. Got it at Crappy Tire. I just use it for cutting skids and scrap for fire wood. It works great for me.

I bought a Poulan Pro 20" from Princess auto and it works awesome. Starts every time and lots of power. It is great for cutting firewood, but too big to haul in the Jeep. That's why I picked up a Mac 110 as well.

Thanks for everyones input.

This is the saw I think I have decided on

Stihl  ms230   40cc engine, 15'' bar $329 on sale, if I buy a 6 pack of oil for $12 they will extend the warrant to two years. It seemed like a good combination of price and features. Plus I can buy it here locally in Cochrane which is always a good thing to be able to do

How much did u pay for that at PA? I was looking at a Poulan at crappy tire couple days ago and it was about $200 for a 16"...wondering if pa's prices are a bit lower.
