I'm looking to buy a welder and am looking for opinions. I want a 220 volt MIG with GAS. Would like info on brands, type and thickness of wire, types of gas to use and how much for a bottle and how long it lasts. I plan on using it mainly for 1/4" steel or less.

cant go wrong with a miller set up and with gas i would go with whats called MIG mix gold, just becouse thats what we use in our shop

Ya want to buy a good quality welder, Miller, Lincon, Hobart. Merlin do you know where you get the gas from? Also I see Home depot sells assorted gasses now. Anyone know prices?

25 pecent C02 mix for a bit less splatter. I get mine at oxy pro. I buy my bottles outright, but you can rent.

My bottle is a small, and is good for about 2.5-3 hours of constant welding. That usually takes me a month to 2 months go through. Depending how busy I am.

For 1/4" steel .30 will do the trick and still be ok for smaller stuff. .35 is going to be a bit big on the little stuff, but works well on 1/4" and 3/16's.

A miller 210 is a nice welder that is big enough to handle all your thick hobby stuff, but can go low enough to still do sheet. Its also set up for aluminum spoolgun and dual bottles if you ever get into welding aluminum.

The 210 is rated to weld 3/8's single pass. I've honestly never needed mine set at more then a 4 for voltage, and it goes to 7. But Im slow and steady, I guess you could go higher if you like to burn things in really fast.

I definately recommend it for a solid machine around the garage.

Bill thanks, exactly the info I was looking for. I don't need to do 3/8" in a single pass so I was looking at a 180 Miller with the same features. I notice there are deals on the net for welder,cart, extra tips, helmet, hammer, a spool each of flux and mig wire for like $800. Going around tomorrow to a couple welding suppy houses in town and see what they got to offer. Anyone know of good places I should be checking? I would like to keep my business here in town.

Praxair has welders in a showroom and the gases you need.
