SAw this Rubi in the bargain finder,
http://www.canadatrader.com/result/detailinfo.aspx?ID=25451509&pgno=2&srt=7

It's a really cheap price for the year and model, but it needs tires, looks like it's for 170k on it, and has damage on the front bumper from a minor accident.  Everything tells me to stay away from a leaseback Rubicon, but I thought I'd ask anyways

The price is definitely attractive, but there would be a few things I would check.

First have a look underneath for mud, not the obvious places, because that will tell you if it has been offroad, also look for damages.

Second, I would take it to a trusted mechanic and have everything looked at, especially the fluids to see if it has been serviced properly, like the diffs.

Then after that, and everything checks out, you have to trust the gut

very good price. Seems too good to be true. They probably don't know what they've got.

I think they know what they have...it's a leaseback with high K's, the picture looks good, in person it looks worn out...thanks for the replies everyone...is there a place that deals with Jeeps that I could take it for a thorough inspection to see if it's worth it?

I think it would be worth it as a project.  Drive it until something goes - replace as necessary with better stuff.

I would bet that right off the bat you would need to do full driveline fluid changes, filter changes, tires, front end, shocks, the odd bushing... etc, etc.  Probably $2k after its all done, especially if you aren't doing it yourself.

buy it.

spend 3K on fixes or upgrades and you still got a good deal.

4L engine will last like 350km or more if taken care of.

My opinion its been beat and is cheap for a reason.

I'd recommend spending the extra money on the 03 rubi in the for sale section.

http://www.calgaryjeep.com/indexset.htm

The parts in that jeep would cost you almost double the difference from that beat up trader one.

Finance the extra few bucks, get yourself a well known jeep that is ready to go out of the box.

My 2 cents.

We deal with leases at my work and most are in great shape.

I bought my last 2001 dodge ram from work. It was a lease. Lots of people on here have seen my nice white truck i had on the trails. Never had a problem with it.

Most lease companies dont care and want to get rid of them and buy more new ones to make more money on new ones. round and round.

Before i used to think leased vehicle would be trashed after but there not really.

Some are trashed but you can easil;y tell if one was..

170K in 3 years means alot of highway driving which is actually alot better for most moving parts on a vehicle. Course it could have been a courier or pizza delivery truck too :D

My rubi will be 5 years old, september 2007.

Regardless, I rebuilt the bottom end of a 4.7L on a 02WJ with 60k on it. The rod bearings were done due to lack of maintenance. The motor wouldnt hold oil pressure after it warmed up.

That price, lease back, 170k, I wouldnt trust it.

Buy it, put tires on it, have one major component fail, you just paid for Vinces.

Why take the risk when there is already a better deal on the board here?

i agree 1000 percent. This jeep has been pampered by an owner that cares about their stuff. It is very clean and very, very, well built!
It has everything with less kms and tons of aftermarket stuff that would cost over $15,000 to get done.

Problem is, I'm looking for a stock Jeep.  It would be sort of a crime to buy a Jeep like this and rarely take it off road.  If someone wants to buy this monster and sell their much closer to stock TJ instead of building it, I'd prefer to buy that one...

Then I'd recommend you look at none rubicon models. Something like a Sahara or a sport model would be more suited to your needs, and less money then a Rubi. Also better mileage, and more comfortable ride.
