I've got a 79 CJ7 with a 360 AMC, and she's leaking oil. I'm pretty sure its the rear main oil seal. I checked with Parts Source, and they don't have any seals in stock, they'd have to order it from a 3rd party, and couldn't tell me if its a one piece seal or a two piece seal. I'm just wondering if they came stock with a one piece seal, or two piece seal. To change this, does the tranny have to be split from the block?

if it's anything like the 1976 401 AMC then the seal kit comes in 4 parts, 1 front and 1 rear seal, as well as right and left oilpan gaskets.

Or are you refering to the oil seal on the crankshaft, if so I think the 76 has a two piece seal

It should be the same as the 401, and I believe its the Rear main bearing oil seal. What else could be leaking? The oil is coming down off the front of my transmission, there's nothing visible on the motor, and it is definitely motor oil.

After checking the haynes manual, it refers to a upper and lower seal for the V8, guess I'll have to start shopping for seal kits.

Should be 2 piece.
Pull starter, oil pan, rear Bearing cap. Bottom piece of seal is in cap, top part can be hit out with a punch.

Yeah that sounds like it could be the rear main. Make sure when you install the new one that you dont put it in backwards like my dad did, else it'll leak even worse :lol:

Thanks! That really helps. So it should be do-able with the transmission still in place? Anyone know of a good place to get the gasket set? Should I try and order from Parts Source, maybe Mopac, or??

My dad's truck had an automatic transmistion. What he did was disconnect the drive axles, disconnect transmission from the engine while being supported on a floor jack. and slide it back a bit to give some room to work around the seal. Not sure if this is completely necessary as I believe he had more than just the seal to fix

I've done 2 diferent 4.0l rear main's, first one with tranny removed (it was being replaced), was easier to move around and get a better view of things; and once with tranny still in, which is also very do able. I don't think most people would remove tranny just to replace a rear main.
