wiring problems...

79 CJ7, with a generic GM tilt steering column.  The emergency flashers switch is located on the column, near the ignition, well, my switch is broken.  So I can't turn off my emergency flashers, and have no signals while they're flashing. It's an expensive fix for something so simple, i thought I could cheat by tracing the flashers switch wire, and splice in a new switch and put it on the dash. I found the diagram, looks like the brown wire is the one for the flashers, so I snipped it, and lost all it all. I don't think that's going to work, unless I picked the wrong wire.

Anyone have any suggestions, or should I start shopping for another steering column?

What do u mean the switch is broken is it stuck in or is something inside fried

If memory serves me correct most GM's used 2 flashers one for 4-ways and one for signals but I think that CJ's use a single flasher If the signal switch in the column need to be replaced go to PNP wreck a steering column there and learn how it comes apart get the correct one for ur column and the take urs apart and fix it

It takes me about an hour and a half start to finish to change the signal switch in the 73 to 87 GM's which is the column I'm guessing  u have

It's the little plastic piece that the nob screws into, its broke and the nob just goes in and out while the flashers are on all time. The CJ has two seperate flasher bulbs, one for signals, and one for the flashers, so right now when its parked I just pull out the flasher. When the flasher is pulled, the signal lights are all dead.

I do have a J20 sort of parts truck, but its not a tilt column, but maybe I'll take the time and pull it apart to try and get mine fixed. Kind of sucks cause the CJ is my daily driver.

If u pull the steering wheel off and the lock plate u should be able to push the 4-way switch out into the off position

That sounds like it could work too, as long as I don't have any major break downs in traffic again... I guess it's more of a temp solution until I can do it right.

Save yourself some grief, Go to PnP, get a list of what collums fit and pull another one. should only be about 10 bucks.
Last time I pulled a collum I think it took 30 mins...
Use your phone and take a pic of the wiring so you have achance to match it up, but if its basic GM you shouldn't have any trouble.

Another option would be to ditch the stock switch setup and hoseclamp and oldschool truck style external switch. They came in CJ's up until around 76 or 77 I think.

Im sure you can still get them as new somewhere. They are dead easy.

Figure out your wiring, hook it up to the external and call it down.

I dont think they have a return, but they look cool    

Steve could help with the wiring, I'd have no clue where to start. Something I'd look at just because I like those old style switches.
