Jeep won't turn off
« on: July 20, 2005, 07:29:28 AM »
I had some electrical problems the other day, but after a new alternator everything seemed to be working perfect.  Until I went to turn off the jeep (79 CJ7 with a 360), with the ignition in the off position, the motor is still running.  I can even pull out the key and it still runs.  Everything else is working fine, it just won't turn off.  I was thinking maybe I blew a fuse or the ignition was junk, but even then you'd think the ignition would die and I wouldn't be able to start.  I have no problems starting at all.

After thinking it through, I would imagine it has something to do with the wire that goes from the ignition to the actual coil (maybe the coil is bad, then then you'd think it wouldn't start in the first place...)  Does anyone have any ideas, or know which wire in particular I am looking for?  I haven't broken out my manuals yet, but will probably have to and also open up the wiring harness and find out if there is a problem with the wire.  Any help would be greatly apreciated...

Thanks!

Coil wire

Possibly the power supply wire to the coil is not being interrupted by the ignition switch.  I would guess a new ignition switch would fix the problem.

current is leaking back through the alternator and powering up your ignition system. a resistor is required to solve this problem I just cant remember where it goes. I found this info on MSD ignition trouble shooting guide and it worked for me.
this jeepsucks up every nickle I make.

Thanks!  I checked out the MSD site and found what you were talking about.  I'll give it a shot tonight, sounds like it might work.

I put the diode in the circuit, and the truck turned off fine.  The problem now is that the battery won't keep a charge, when the truck is running, the voltage drops.  So I would imagine my diode is no good.  Will get a new one tonight and try it out.
