Install tips needed on 1" body Lift
« on: February 24, 2007, 01:48:31 PM »
I just purchased a Daystar 1" body lift and want to install it on a 89' yj and would like some pointers to make the install go smooth... I am fairly new to jeep mods but a fast learner! OK the instructions seam pretty simple but in my experience that can be misleading.

Just do one side at a time, and give some thought to doing a motor lift at the same time

Take care , you are gonna have difficulty with some of the old fasteners .They may break , if at all possible , try to get some penetrating spray on the threads , let it soak in and spray again , do not skip this step , to do so invites breakage followed by extensive grief with thread repairs and gaining access to the captive nuts on the body. Try not to break anything ,  it takes some "feel" for how hard to twist on them , knowing when to stop before it's too late.

When installing the new bolts , use never sieze on the threads to enable future removal , if necessary ,  don't skip this step either.

It can be pretty easy , or it can be a real nasty episode , based on the age and condition of the vehicle.

Don't bust anything ! or tear up your hands , wear gloves for personal protection.

well i got one side almost complete today, thanks to a old body mount hole that was too small (as warned in instructions ) spent almost 3 hrs with a small grinding wheel attached to a drillbit extention and my corless drill and 3 batterys later....  Hell I got it though!!   the one problem i have ran into is their is a gap between the new spacer and the body I thought i could just use the bole and it would pull together but the bolt was too short thanks to the gap..   I will try to get a .25" longer bolt tomarrow and that should cure the problem.. but before i run off ang get one i will attempt the other side in the morning! thanks for the tips so far so good... I will update tomarrow!

Don't do this ^^^^^^

do as the instructions say and use lock tight :!:

The last thing u want is a body mounting bolt coming loose

Suit yourself  ,  The body was removed from the frame on my 88 three years ago , all of the bolts were difficult to remove but they all came out without incident . I have heard horror stories about removal of these bolts and the difficulty in doing a proper repair ( usually a butcher job )
When I replaced all of those bolts with new hardware and  body mounts  , I used never sieze , purely to ease future removal , I've checked them twice since and have not found any to be loose. Now I could go and look in one of my several factory service manuals , about the use of loctite , but I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say there is probably no mention of loctite on body mount bolts , I could be wrong but from memory there is little detail in the chapter which covers body mounts n' such I just dont believe it's necessary to use loctite here , there is normally enough rust and corrosion under there to keep these bolts in place. I'm also a firm believer in the use of torque wrenches , where many , seem to think they have a "feel" for it an don't often reach for a torque wrench .

Loctite has it's place,  as does neversieze , knowing where to apply either product is mainly based on the recomendation of factory engineers or the experience of the technician doing the work. Few people think of using neversieze , even after going through the grief of stubborn fastener removal.

Any one ever fought with or broke off a skid plate bolt ? , this is another place where I'd recommend the use of anti galling / anti siezing products.

Oh , all of  this is coming from a guy who has been a tradesman since the mid seventies , has three trades , has been hand building ground up vehicles for over thirty years.

I'm replacing the Daystar urethane  body mount kit I installed in 2004 on my 88 YJ with a  + 1" Daystar body mount kit very soon.  I'm not expecting to have any difficulty removing any of the bolts ( I neverseized them ) , those mounts are going in my 94 YJ to replace the rotting originals. The bolts that are in the 94 ? I'll probably have to use a fine balance of care and brute force to get those suckers out.

Will I be using loctite on any of the bolts ? , nope , never have , never will.

http://www.jksmfg.com/support/install_b1_pn9903.pdf

http://www.performanceaccessories.com/instructions/933.pdf

both company's call for for loctite

And the factory service manual for my 2001 says that they are loctited from the factory

the proper application of thread sealer to the entire length of the threads will prevent rust from forming and all it takes is a little more force or heat to remove the bolt

Thanks for all the tips and suggestions! I have it completed and i read the instructions that came with my kit and it dose not state either lock tight or never seize so i did as it said and used neither but i did use the torq wrench as they said to factory specs.. :D if i knew how to put photos on here i would............

the 1" lift actuall lifted my jeep almost 1 3/4" the old body mounts must have been compressed alot.
