Put a known good or charged battery in the vehicle. Then place a mulitmeter between the post you will be connecting last. Usually the neg. Do not connect the battery post. What you may notice is that you are reading the battery voltage because you have a short to ground somewhere in the vehicle. This also works for a blown fuse in a system. Multimeter to connected to both ends of the fuse block. All you need to do then is go around the vehicle disconnecting components until you find the load or the short, as when you do the multimeter should rear zero volts.

Follow your main power wires from the Batt., one must be cut or coroded and touching a ground.
Or you are hooking your Batt. up backwards

Like I was saying disconnect components with the multimeter attached and you will find the short or draw. There could be a wiring harness short or almost anything. This test can be used on harnesses, sensors, you name it. The only good part is that it may take a case of beer to help hunt it down.

You could always take the alternator and Battery down to auto value or canadian tire or something if it's not too much hassle.  They can test both so at least you'd know that they are good.
