what the heck is wrong with my stupid heep now
« on: August 02, 2005, 09:58:43 PM »
ok, so I buried my jeep in 42" of mud about a month ago and burned up the clutch driving home from Waiparous. Finally had some free time and got the tranny back in tonight and took it for a spin around the block...everything (except the t-case linkage) seemed to be fine...and I was happy. I decided to celebrate the running of the jeep by taking the top and doors off and heading out for a cold 6 pack. It was running great and I almost made it into town (about 7 km) before it lost power and began slowing. I was able to maintain about 20kmh at 1500 rpm in 2nd, but no faster. I decided to turn around and try and make it home...without a cold 6 pack...and I was fumed!!! After about 5 minutes of puttering along the check engine light came on...and being a stupid moron I ignored it. Finally made it home and got it back in the garage. The engine sounds like it's running fine, but it won't go over about 1800 rpm. Any ideas on what to check...cuz I'm almost ready to give up on the whole jeep thing

Did you possibly damage the crank sensor on top of the engine bellhousing? Also sounds like it could be a plugged up exhaust. Did you have to remove it to get the tranny out?

Don't know what vintage your exhaust system is, but given that you were in some deep stuff, maybe some exhaust baffling has broken loose and is causing back pressure.  Doesn't take much blockage to shut the power down.

the cps was removed before I pulled the tranny, and I remember reinstalling it so I don't think that's the problem.

I had a feeling when I took it in to RMOR earlier this spring for a session of inspect and repair that the cat was maybe clogged, it had a lack of power and increased fuel consumption, but there was also a cracked exhaust manifold and that's what they said was causing it, but I still think that the exhaust may be part or all of the problem

I had the same thing in mine after falling into a 4ft hole.

It was the the exhaust. Both my muffler and cat were plugged solid.

You can tell when you smack em with a hammer. If you get a heavy thud instead of hollow twang you know thats part of the trouble for sure.

good luck and stay outta the muck

After a complete rebuild this spring I vowed "no more mud", but then you get on the trail and half the group goes through a mudhole...what do you do? turn around and head home alone or see if your ne mods and upgrades were worth it?

Have you checked what codes it's giving you against the Haynes manual?  I think when the check engine light comes on, you turn the Jeep off, turn the key on, off, on, off, then on again and see what happens.  the check engine light will flash a certain number of times, then stop, then go again, then stop then finish with a certain number of flashes.  I don't have my Haynes manual handy, but it does give you a run down and some possible problems depending on what codes you're given.  Then again, I don't know what kind or year of Jeep yours is, so I could be out to lunch...

I had the TPS sensor go on my '94 Cherokee and it ran fine unless I tried to aceelerate and the check engine code trick helped me figure that one out.

Just my $0.02

My TJ doesn't show codes like that, but on the bright side I figured out the problem. After picking up an OBDII code reader and getting a bad TPS code, I replaced the TPS, closed the hood, replaced the snorkel cap and drove around the block...still no power. Went back into the garage, removed the snorkel cap and...some idiot had stuffed a plastic bag in there  (probably to keep the water out while trying to pressure wash 200 pounds of mud off the jeep). Removed the bag, drove around the block and...all is well again.

So, now I have a shiny new code reader and a spare TPS. At least it didn't cost TOO much, I could have ripped into the exhaust and then found the bag

That may come in quite handy, I would like to borrow that sometime and switch to synthetic fluids, then "tune" the engine to eek every last squirrel from the 4L.
