4.2 rebuild
« on: April 30, 2007, 08:42:27 PM »
I would like to rebuild my 4.2 in the 90 YJ. A little too much blow by and the rear main seal leaking again. Runs fairly good still though. I would like to get opinions on the following:
Best place for parts and machining?
Best way to add a little more performance "bang for your buck"

My goal is good solid power and reliability, your comments would be appreciated.

Firebolt is good and  so is Moores. I've personally not used either. A buddy had a motor done for a nissan pickup at firebolt and they were right on with the quote and the service was very good.

Bore over and do a 4.O L head conversion.  There is lots of info on this and an easy way to gain power.  I am giong to do the same when I rebuild one I picked up.

on this forum and others I have seen the motorcraft 2100 carb discussed positively for replacing the carter, might be worth your time and $ to learn more ...

search this sites tech forum or visit the following where its currently being discussed http://www.edmontonjeep.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=461

I did a head conv in '02,  read as many articles as possible beforehand as collectively they will save you some headaches, like the #1 header pipe ( much larger now ) interfere's with p/s bracket which needed a fair chunk cut off it without removing to much and a gr8 bolt welded on ... if I didnt find an article on it I would have destoyed a dozen before I got it right ...

btw: the offroad.com link above is possibly the first I have seen where they put the old yj intake back on ... but he didnt finish the article as he stated as he had other plans,  the 4L head has the pins that the intake rests on at a different height so you would have to grind some new 1/2 moons ... the HO intake ports are larger than the 258 so kinda thought the 258 intake might not cover them properly ... I think the same dude did a followup article with a 4L intake and MPI

I wish i would have known about the motorcraft 2100 carburator earlier as I replaced mine with the oem replacement through Autovalue. Works great for now. I believe that Bowness Auto has the 2100 for around $200 or less.
