CJ Gear Ratio

Just curious what the stock gearing in my jeep would be. Its a 79 CJ7, and originally would have had a 304 V8. Its a Quadra-Trac, AMC20 Rear, D44 in the front. I can't find any ID tags, or markings.

The reason I'm checking is with 35's now, its a bit under powered. I also think I blew my rear locker, so if it's all going to be coming apart, I might as well looking at re-gearing.

Thanks!

I believe the choices for axle gears in those days were commonly 2:73 gears, could also be lower, but I doubt it with a 304 stock

So I cleaned down the area of the diff that is supposed to have the code, and looks like I've got "A". which is 3.54 for a narrow track axle. I suppose it could have been changed, but 3.54 sounds about right.

As for the carrier, I've read that they're different between the 2.73 and 3.31-5.13, so I'm in the right range, and think I'm going to try 4.10's (used to be 32's now running 35's).

Thanks!
