I have never encountered this before. I installed 4.88 gears in my ford 8.8. for my 93 ZJ. I am using the stock limited slip carrier, which I believe is o.k. for high ratios. When I go to put the pinion pin back in, the crown gear is hanging over too far. I cannot reinstall the pinion pin. Is this common with high gear installs? The only way I am going to fit the pin back in is to remove a bit of material from one of the crown teeth. The problem with that is that, is that in order to get a good pattern with this gear set I had to push the pattern to the crown toe and one tooth will be missing matterial close to the gear contact. I know it doesnt matter for the drive side but I am worried I will get noise on coast. Anyone who has encountered this let me know, because I am close thinking that the parts are faulty.

hey, i have done gears where i have had to shave the ring gear. i have not noticed any noise or experienced any adverse side effects. just remember to take off as little as possible!

I shaved the cross pin....again...as little as possible. :lol:

I just put 4.56s in an 8.8 and I had to grind a small portion off one of the teeth to get the crosspin out. I had it installed when I discovered this so I covered everything up with plastic and duct tape except for the small operating area.

I used a die grinder and just cut away a small portion of a corner, enough for the pin to slide out one side.

The advice I'd gotten from a gear installer when I ran into the problem was to grind the gear not the pin.

Works fine.

I ended up doing a little of both. I figured that if the goal was to do as little as possable I could remove less material splitting the difference between the gear and the pin. Also if I had only done the gear I would have had to remove alot of material 4.88 hung over about 1/4'.

Get a new pin when you get a chance Dave. Million at pick n pull.

Lots of guys on JU have busted shaved pins. None of them have shredded shaved teeth.

I shave the teeth with a cutoff wheel. No noise or issues to date.
