Swapping in a 4.2 ? , pfffff , hardly worth it .

The 4.0  makes more sense , it's a bit of work though .  A rough list of  required items would include an engine / tranmission / transfercase package , driveshafts to suit your configuration ,  the wiring , exhaust system , the frame will need work , specifically the engine mounts moved.

Why not do a gearing change  instead , does the 2.5 you have now still run good ?

The gears are 4.10s

I swapped in the drivetrain from a XJ into my YJ in place of the angry squirrels.  Basically like was already said for parts and the frame work.  I am definitely glad that I did the swap as it makes it much more enjoyable to drive on the highway.  Also make sure you route the exhaust off the header in front of the oil pan, more protection

still might want to do gears in time but ive read lots of writeups of guys having the 4 banger and running 38s+. all in the gearing. you might not be as capable but not worth it to swap a 4L in. still lots of work...go 350 then

I disagree.  It all depends on what you want.  I did not want v8 power because as you stated with the right gearing you will be fine.  I did my engine for a very reasonable price

i agree with ya. i have a 4.2L and built it up and geared it. should have went will lower gears but i still would like more go-go juice. so figure i would throw the idea out there that its just as easy to do a TBI350 then a 4L and you got the extra ponies
